Provincial Medical Sign Language Interpreting Service Community Engagement Update
Transcript of the Vlog:
As we work to improve services for the deaf community at the same time, we are committed to keeping the community informed of our work. We continue to work through how to improve services. We are extending the contract with the WIDHH – Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. While we work through this process, a request for proposal for future service delivery will start in January 2019 which will be open to all ASL interpreting service providers.
In follow-up to our engagement sessions this spring and winter across the province in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George, the community came together for engagement sessions. During the sessions, the report that was collected is available on the PLS website and video log of the summary report will be shared on various deaf media channels for example DEAFBC.CA. This report has also been sent directly to everyone who attended these sessions.
The next step in our engagement work is establishing a deaf-lead community advisory committee. Their role is to advise PLS – Provincial Language Service and the PHSA – Provincial Health Services Authority about service delivery. Advice on how to provide services to the community, draft criteria for advisory members will be reviewed by deaf community members that have been involved in our engagement work in the past for feedback, then a call for participation will be shared.

Celebration of Life- Luce Victoria LeBlanc
“The poster is a black and white photograph of a party moment, with Luce standing sideways on the right side, head turned left at the camera. She has her hair long and straight, with front-parted eyebrow-length bangs, and black-eyelined eyes looking straight at the camera. Luce makes a slight smile with a small silver-ball pierce at the corner of her left upper lip and wears a denim jacket with three small round pins on the top left. Victoria holds a half-full glass of white wine in her right hand.
The words “Celebration of Life” are at the flyer top in a rainbow-coloured semi-script font. The same font at the bottom reads “Luce Victoria LeBlanc.”
In the same smaller font, in light yellowish-white, “Saturday, November 3, 2018, 1:00 – 3:00 pm.” Below this, in smaller, different white font: “Burnaby Central Secondary School, 6011 Deer Lake Parkway, Conference Room A206, British Columbia, Canada”
“Come dressed in Luce-style fashion! (colourful, sparkly and bold).”
On the black edge of the poster’s right margin, finely printed in white text: “Photo credit: Breanna & Lyle Muresan. Flyer Artist: Jodi Lynn Birley.”

Deaf Games Night
Sea Star Wasting Disease and how it Impacts BC’s Entire Ecosystem/ Ocean Matters October Lecture with ASL Interpreters
Tuesday, 23-Oct-2018 @ 7pm (Doors 6.30pm)
Since 2013, millions of sea stars have died along the west coast of North America.
These sea stars started showings bizarre symptoms. They developed skin lesions, which progressed to the sea stars losing their limbs, and finally causing the disintegration of the whole animal. This outbreak confused, and worried scientists, as sea stars are a ‘keystone species’. This means that a large loss in sea star numbers could cause a large change in their ecosystem as a whole.
Scientists are spending a lot of time figuring out what was causing these symptoms and how we can help fight this outbreak. They learnt that a virus is causing this disease, but they are still looking for exactly which virus it is.
In this talk, Dr. Alyssa Gehman will explore the current state of sea star wasting disease in British Columbia. She will discuss how the response to the disease changes along the coast, how the virus affects different sea star species and how this knowledge can help us fight this disease!
