hyperfiXation opens May 7 at SUM gallery

GVAD is sharing this information:
Vancouver BC, Apr 22nd, 2026 | SUM gallery (#425-268 Keefer St.), Canada’s premiere Queer-mandated art gallery, is proud to present hyperfiXation, a solo exhibition of hand-cut collage works by Jay Cabalu. In hyperfiXation, the artist excavates his obsession with consumption and the exploitation of beauty in manufactured magazine images. Through a selection of hand-cut collages that employ scopophilia (taking pleasure in looking), he demonstrates how capitalism fabricates consent and compliance to material culture. hyperfiXation runs Tuesday to Saturday, noon–6pm, until May 29, 2026.

This exhibition has been generously supported by The Parachute Fund, and is part of a suite of events at SUM gallery that celebrate Asian Heritage Month.

Join us for the Opening Reception on Thursday, May 7th, from 5–9pm.
Please note: to accommodate members of our community, from 5–6pm the Opening Reception will be masks mandatory; from 6pm to close, masks are recommended. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available at the reception desk.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jay Cabalu is a Filipino-Canadian pop artist based in Vancouver, BC. His works are made of 100% hand-cut collage as well as other found materials. He discovered magazines and comic books at a young age after his family immigrated to Canada in 1991. As a response to mass media and capitalism, Cabalu repurposes print media to create highly meticulous collages. In subject matter ranging from pop icons, self-portrait and still life, Jay’s artistic practice has evolved over the past decade as critique and correction to the failures of media’s attempts to depict his everyday reality. By reappropriating the visual language of advertisements and popular culture, Jay inverts depictions of pleasure and luxury to portray a collaged world overflowing with contradictions.
