Sole Food Farms is an internationally recognized social enterprise that transforms vacant urban land into street farms that grow artisan quality fruits and vegetables. Our mission is to empower individuals with limited resources by providing jobs, agricultural training and inclusion in a supportive community of farmers and food lovers.

Position Description

The Farm Processing Assistant (FPA) works under the Distribution Coordinator (DC) and Farm Manager to aid in the post-harvest processing of all farm produce.  The successful applicant will thrive in a fast-paced environment where they are challenged to handle our product with the utmost care and attention, prepare items for farmers markets and restaurant orders, wash totes used for produce, and maintain cleanliness and organization of the processing station at the end of each processing shift. The FPA will also serve as the Market Lead for our Wednesday market which means this position will be responsible for making sure weekly sales goals are met or (hopefully) exceeded.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Aid in post-harvest processing of all farm produce; this includes washing, weighing, recording, and quality/consistency control of all farm produce.
  • Bunch produce (ex. carrots or kale) in a consistent and quick manner.
  • Report any issues with produce quality to the DC.
  • Pack farmers market and restaurant produce as directed by the DC.
  • Wash Rubbermaid totes used to harvest and store produce
  • Clean the processing station at the end of each shift, and take compost to pile.
  • Any other farm tasks: including harvest, raking, weeding, etc. if time permits and as directed by management.
  • Serve as the Market Lead at the Wednesday Main Street Farmers’ Market from June to October

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum 1-year experience handling food; either direct farm processing experience, commercial kitchen or industrial food preparation.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Understanding of produce standards expected in high-end kitchens an asset.
  • Keen attention to detail, see variations in quality of a product or bunch size.
  • Can work quickly and with minimal supervision; fast learner.
  • Works in a clean, organized, and orderly manner
  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment similar to that of a busy kitchen
  • Friendly and outgoing,

Sole Food Farms is an innovative social enterprise that operates one of North America’s largest urban farms to provide support to people facing barriers.

The position of Processing Assistant is an hourly position classified as Farm Worker, under BC Employment standardthat may be required to work up to 60 hours per week during peak harvest season to get our produce to its home. A typical work schedule is 6:30am–4:30pm, Mon-Fri (June-September) but expect that some days may require more. Hours will be reduced to about 20 hours per week in the off-peak season.

In addition to an entry level wage, benefits include deep discounts on produce and working outside with a bunch of amazing people.

Potential candidates will be contacted for an interview as they are identified. This seasonal position will start in May. For the right person, seasonal renewal is an option. This posting will remain active until the position is filled.

About the Opportunity
Your role as a support worker will be providing support and actively engaging a supported individual to live a fulfilling and increasingly independent life. You are a motivated and outgoing person with a passion to for person-centered supports. This means you could be helping an individual to discover more of their community, learn new life-skills, find employment and more. Some of your duties can include:
• Providing individuals support with various life goals
• Home support duties (including, but not limited to personal care, bathing, bathroom support, meal preparation and light housekeeping)
• Community outings (including, but not limited to volunteering, paid employment and leisure activities)
• Maintaining records of daily activities and goal progression

About You
You are interested in supporting others and show an understanding of the person-centered and active support approach. Additionally, you have the following requirements:

Required:
• Fluent in sign language
• Class 5 driver’s license (permanent staff must be willing to obtain Class 4)
• Access to a vehicle
• First Aid and CPR Certificate
• Clear criminal record (paid by CLS)
• Clean driver’s abstract

Assets:
• Prior paid or volunteer experience
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training
• Mandt System®
• Knowledge of Person Centered Active Supports

Event: Paddling for a Cleaner Ocean

Location: The Vancouver Aquarium
Description: Join us to hear about the journey of Mathilde Gordon and Lucy Graham , two paddlers kayaking from Juneau, Alaska to Vancouver Island, Canada. Their plan: to experience new places, take on the elements, connect with nature, challenge ourselves and have fun. They are using the three-month-long paddle to raise awareness of marine debris issues, fundraise for those fighting for ocean protection and conservation, and inspire others. Both of them have been living single-use plastic free since the beginning of 2016, and they’ll talk about taking the Be Plastic Wise pledge to the next level by paddling the Inside Passage without use of any single-use plastics.

There will be ASL interpreters and the venue is fully wheelchair accessible!

Vancouver Art Gallery in ASL

Hello!  Douglas College Interpreter Students will be going to the Vancouver Art Gallery on Tuesday May 1st. This event will be in sign language, no speaking.  <Voice turned off> So if you join us, please use just sign language for the duration of the event. Admission cost is by donation. It is up to you how much you donate to the Vancouver Art Gallery. There is coat & bag check at no cost. We will be getting together to enter at 5pm – there will be a line up and doors open at 5pm.  There is no specific end time, stay as long you want but the Vancouver Art Gallery closes at 9pm. Hope to see you there!
