ASL for LINC explained in ASL Vlog by Imran Hakamali.

Transcript:

Hello everyone
Are you Deaf or Hard of hearing?
Or do you know anyone who is Deaf or hard of hearing?
Do you know a little English, or no English?
Then ASL for LINC may be for you!
I will explain what ASL for LINC is.
ASL – American Sign Language. LINC – Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada.
I will be explaining what an ASL for LINC class looks like
Students will come to class and will be learning write and read English as well as ASL!
The purpose of this learning may be for jobs, school, education, communities, and other reasons.
What is VCC? It is Vancouver Community College.
VCC is a leading college for DHH – Deaf and Hard of Hearing as well as English training.
VCC has two campuses. There is the downtown campus and the Broadway campus.
I will be focusing on the Broadway campus as the ASL for LINC class will take place there.
How will you come to this campus? It is easy.
We have public transportation, for example the city bus or SkyTrain.
The closest SkyTrain station to VCC Broadway is the VCC-Clark station.
When you take the SkyTrain, and get off at this station, it will be walking distance to the campus; really easy.
When is the class taking place?
It is from April 9 to June 29, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. From 830am to 245pm.

Oh, just passed April 9 as it has already begun.
It is not a problem—you still can come even though you missed the start date.
Those of you who are interested, there are requirements. I will explain.
You need to be a Permanent Resident of Canada.
Or, have Refugee status, due to reasons such as wars, religious, political, other reasons. If you already have a Canadian Citizenship, you are not eligible. Sorry about that.
The other requirements are you must be Deaf or Hard of hearing.
Also, you must be available to attend ASL for LINC for 12 weeks
ASL for LINC is funded by IRCC – Immigrations, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
If you are interested in joining or need info, you can contact Peter Fischer.
We have a flyer with the same information as I just explained in sign.
The information contains the ASL for LINC, address, telephone number, and email. Peter Fischer’s contact information is at the bottom of the flyer.
The flyer will be shown shortly

“Pirates and Lovers” play at Stage Door Theatre

STAGE DOOR THEATRE TROUPE’S LATEST SWASHBUCKLING PRODUCTION

Vancouver, BC – This spring, a tale of romance, action, and adventure called Pirates and Lovers sets sail at Stage Door Theater located on the lower level of Heritage Hall (3102 Main Street, Vancouver). Hosted by the Stage Door Theatre Troupe and supported by posAbilities, the play will run on April 24, 25, 26 and May 1, 2, and 3 at 7:30 pm. If the pirate’s life is the life for you, $15 tickets are available at the door.

The Stage Door Theatre Troupe is an award-winning group known for its improv style, plays, and imaginative actors. All actors live with developmental disabilities and they’re excited to bring the community together through their engaging, exciting, and thought-provoking performances. No matter the theme or content of a play, they use their unique skills and expertise to create something never before seen.

In Pirates and Lovers, all havoc breaks loose when a ruthless greedy judge denies his daughter and her lover of their togetherness. Instead of granting her freedom, he forces her to marry another man. This leads us to question, what will happen next? So avast ye mateys and come see excitement levels rise just like the sea while actors get into character and transform into swashbuckling buccaneers. Director, Don House, shares: “This year’s show has been challenging as we haven’t had this many actors on stage before. Giving 16 performers (a mix of new timers and veterans) a chance to shine isn’t easy. But I think we have a fun show this year, with some very funny moments.”

Title: Unraveling Journeys: An Afternoon of Films

Organized and taking placed on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Musqueam, Squamish & Tsleil-Waututh nations.

Join the viet* collective for community justice in an afternoon of films, food and discussion to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

This gathering centers the presence of queer and trans folk who are Black, Indigenous, and/or people of colour and their family and friends, whose stories and experiences are erased and sidelined in mainstream narratives of the war.

We recognize that the impacts of the so-called “Vietnam War” exists beyond colonial borders and invite those historically forgotten and ignored in these conversations to share space with us as we explore the possibilities of life after and beyond the war.

A short film and a feature-length documentary will be screened (to be confirmed), followed by a lightly-facilitated discussion.

Film Synopses (films are still to be confirmed):

// Xanh //

“Xanh” is the Vietnamese translation of the colors green and blue and is synonymous to the themes and lives of queer and trans people who are forced to navigate a world that enforces binary identities.

Xanh’s main goal is to save up money for top surgery. Their mother is a garment seamstress who polices Xanh’s gender presentation and performance through the creation of feminine clothes. As their mom starts to criticize what they choose to wear, Xanh experiences a series of nightmares and finds their dreams literally shattered.

// Madam Phung’s Last Journey -or- Chuy?n ?i cu?i cùng c?a ch? Ph?ng //

A former monk who left monastic life because “I saw beautiful fags praying, and felt like running away,” Madam Phung is a canny businesswoman who got her start as a singer, and saved her money in the form of gold bars she would bury in the ground. Now she is something of a den mother to her largely transgender troupe – berating them when they drink or fight too much, warning them to stay out of trouble, and dealing with local police and occasionally hostile locals when necessary.

It’s the classic carny existence: long hours; setting up and tearing down the stage; exhorting the crowd to buy raffle tickets and play games; putting on a show. But the people we meet in MADAM PHUNG’S LAST JOURNEY are not your ordinary fairground workers.

This verite documentary takes us on a year-long ride with an itinerant troupe of cross-dressing performers, led by Madam Phung, as they travel the remote southern regions and central highlands of Vietnam.
