VCC Celebration for Sara MacFayden

Are you a VCC grad? What do you remember from BAA class?

Self-discovery? Developing awareness of diversity? Moving across the language continuum “bridge”?

“Slow talking”, story-telling, loads of laughter?

Creative art, sheep mascots, test day treats?

Reflection, reflection, and more reflection?

How Sara was the coolest teacher you’d ever had?

Many of the interpreters working in BC today started their journey towards becoming an ally in the Deaf community in Sara’s class at VCC. After twenty-odd years of inspiring, engaging and educating future interpreters, support workers, parents of deaf children and others who went on to work in the Deaf community, Sara MacFayden will be leaving VCC to teach in the interpreting program at Douglas College.

Please join Vancouver Community College’s ASL & Deaf Studies Program between 5 and 7 PM on Friday, June 25th, 2010 to recognize the significant contribution Sara has made to the program. The celebration will take place at the Broadway campus of VCC with the exact location to be announced.

Please tell your fellow alumni working in different fields about this opportunity to thank Sara!

Telus VRS Trial Lottery Clarification

Title: Clarifying Telus VRS trial lottery

Hello BC Deaf Community,

There are some confusion about the lottery for participation in the Telus VRS trial.   I wrote to Telus to request clarification.

Lottery Process

Some of you have heard that community members were already chosen earlier this week to have the VP200 installed in their homes.  Telus has chosen a few people in the Greater Vancouver area, Edmonton and Calgary to do preliminary testing of the Sorenson VP on Telus internet accounts for verification.

The official lottery will be on June 21st and will include those who have submitted their applications to Telus on Tuesday night and including all applications submitted to WIDHH for delivery to Telus.  Whether you have a Telus account or subscribe to another internet provider you will all be eligible to have your names drawn for participation in the trial.  If you have a different internet provider than Telus you will have to consider switching to Telus to participate in the trial.

US Installers

Some were concerned that US installers will be doing all of the installation for the trial.  Telus has informed us that the US installers are here to provide training for Canadian installers.  Canadian installers will be doing the installation for BC participants in the trial with the exception of recent installations which are for training the Canadian installers.

Expansion of the trial participant numbers

Telus has informed us that the trial lottery on June 21st will not be the final and only lottery.  They will be monitoring the volume of usage and as funding permits add more participants to the trial.

If you wish to participate in the trial you are encouraged to fill out the application and submit it to WIDHH by June 17th at 4:00 p.m.  Participation in the trial is voluntary and your decision.  The only cost is the internet account with Telus as we have been informed.

Thank you,

Monte Hardy

Background: I am thankful for my family, for they have shaped who I am. I am a CODA, a Child of Deaf Adults (both parents), and I have a Deaf sister. As a child, I interpreted things well beyond my years, and did so effortlessless and fluidly. As an adult, I see what a gift it was that I could be a bridge between worlds. I share some of my coda experiences in my stand up comedy – there is humour in all things.

Education: My coach training is from The Coaches Training Institute based out of San Francisco, CA. I will be a Professional Certified Coach in Fall 2010. I received my Bachelor of Arts (English) from Simon Fraser University in 2001. I enjoy the every day teachings life has to offer.

What is Coaching?

Are you ready to:

  • reach your greatest potential?
  • lead a fulfilling and passionate life?
  • get clarity about your values and live your life fully in alignment with them?
  • have more energy and balance in your life?

Coaching is finding a way to live your best life possible, everyday!

Is Coaching like therapy?

No, Coaching is not therapy. It isn’t meant to dwell on past events – it is meant to propel you into your future – the future you want for yourself.

What can you expect?

From yourself: When you commit to Coaching, you can expect that you will gain focus and clarity about what inspires you and drives you. You will create and accomplish meaningful goals for yourself, and achieve success in your life’s passions.

From me: You can expect that I will be a supportive, honest, and passionate Coach. That we will have fun in the discovery of your life’s ambitions and dreams. I believe that each client is naturally creative, resourceful and whole. You know what drives you, and you are fully capable of reaching for your dreams!

I would be honoured to be able to help you along your journey to joy and fulfillment. Drop me a line to book a free strategy session: 778-895-5326 or by Email Here

Deaf Nation World Expo

Meet the rest of the Deaf world,

.

and create your own

.

future here!

.

The 2010 DeafNation World Expo will be held at the Sands Expo Center, the perfect place to truly bring the Deaf together under one roof. The World Expo will take place at Sand Expo’s 200,000 sq. feet exhibit hall, where exhibitions, workshops, entertainment, sporting activities, activities for the children and so on will come together to provide four full days’ worth of many hours of presentations, education and socializing for the attendees. The best thing about the World Expo, aside from the socializing and cultural/language opportunities, will be the free admission to all events.

Our philosophy is that free admission brings a diversity of attendees who can share our culture, needs, language, and information. Overall, our goal is to give everyone the chance to meet new people from all the corners of the world, ranging anywhere from historical regions like Europe, the Americas and Africa to exotic regions like Asia and Australia, and learn new languages, new cultures and new traditions, which will be all done under one great roof. Make your plans right now and come be a part of the DeafNation World Expo, the largest Deaf event there is in the world!
