Acting Against Racism: Strategies for Moving Forward

Have recent national and international events made you feel uncertain or helpless about what you can do to prevent racist or discriminatorybehaviour in your community?

Racism is not new and neither is Islamophobia, but police-reported hate crimes have recently increased in Canada, leaving many of us wondering how we can avoid being victims or bystanders.

We will be joined by keynote speakers: Sunera Thobani and Handel Kashope Wright

A panel discussion will be moderated by Margaret Gallagher.

Join us and let’s continue the momentum of resiliency and hope as active participants who see building an inclusive community as a top priority.

The event is free but RSVP is required: RSVP online at http://actingagainstracism.brownpapertickets.com or call 604-973-0457

FIGHTING CHANCE PRODUCTIONS CLOSES HISTORIC 10TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON WITH ONE OF THE LONGEST RUNNING BROADWAY MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

Fighting Chance Productions closes its ground-breaking 10th anniversary season with the Tony and Pulitzer Prize Award-winning musical A Chorus Line featuring performers from some of the best training institutions across Canada including Capilano University, Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, Sheridan College and the Canadian College for the Performing Arts.

A Chorus Line is one of the greatest show business musicals ever,” says artistic director Ryan Mooney, “and our production featuring graduates and current students from some of the finest theatre training grounds in North America should do justice to this historic show.”.

In 1974 director and choreographer Michael Bennett conducted a series of interviews with chorus members from Broadway shows. His idea was to create a musical honouring those nameless dancers whose careers were often dedicated to playing bit parts and supporting the superstars. From those interviews A Chorus Line was born and has now been performed all over the world by hundreds of thousands of artists.

Fighting Chance’s version has director and choreographer Rachael Carlson at the helm, a Canadian College of Performing Arts and Capilano University graduate. Rachael choreographed Fighting Chance’s successful mounting of Cats which garnered rave reviews as well as sold out houses. Arielle Ballance, a newcomer to the Vancouver theatre scene, serves as music director.

“Rachael aims to honour the original source material, with a few twists,” says Mooney, “Rachael was instrumental in the success of Cats last season, bringing knowledge and ability to her work as choreographer but also a keen eye to where the original could be improved upon. Audiences reacted to her incredible work and I’m sure they’ll have the same feelings when they see what she’s done with A Chorus Line.”.

Featuring songs such as At the Ballet, What I Did for Love and the iconic One, Fighting Chance Productions’ presentation of A Chorus Line will be perfect for those hoping to discover this musical or those wanting to introduce their loved ones to it for the first time.

A CHORUS LINE stars HALEY ALLEN (Bebe), JESSE ALVAREZ (Paul), JOLENE BERNARDINO (Connie), SARAH CANTUBA (Val), KADEN CHAD (Al), JUSTIN DANIELS (Mark), LUCIA FORWARD (Cassie), HAILEY FOWLER (Judy), CHRISTOPHER D KING (Zach), GREG LIOW (Mike), AMANDA LOURENCO (Maggie), RICARDO CUNHA PEQUENINO (Richie), BEN PLATTEN (Greg), VANESSA QUARINTO (Diana), KAILLEY ROESLER (Kristine), ALISHIA SUITOR (Sheila), MARCEL TREMEL (Larry) and ERIC VINCENT (Bobby).

A CHORUS LINE is directed and choreographed by RACHAEL CARLSON, music directed by ARIELLE BALLANCE. Assistant choreography by HAILEY KRAGELJ, set design by BRIAN BALL, lighting design by ANDIE MARIE LLOYD  and sound design by PETER YOUNG. Stage management is by KARA MCLACHLAN.

A CHORUS LINE opens Wednesday August 23rd, 2017 and runs until Saturday September 2nd. Preview performances are August 18th, 19th & 22nd at 8pm.

Tickets for A CHORUS LINE start at just $25.00 and are available now.

The DWCC and CAD-ASC are pleased to release a series of videos, a total of 32 videos in ASL and LSQ.

The purpose of these videos are to increase Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing ASL and LSQ users’ understanding of wireless terminology.
What does data plan mean?
What does voice credit mean?
How many MB are in a GB?

Have a watch & learn!

We will release one video every week Tuesday at 10am. PST, one video in ASL, and one video in LSQ.

Both organizations would like to thank Cineall Productions and Scott Jeffery for their work in production and editing of these videos. Captions were added by Michael J Stewart. Additionally our sincerest appreciation also goes to Arista Haas and Rachel Filion for their work in the writing, editing, and the French translations of these terms.  These videos would not be possible without them. Many thanks!

Enjoy!

DWCC posts a Message with an Update

Origin:  DWCC Deaf Wireless Canada Committee CSSSC public Facebook Page
Date: August 9, 2017

Good evening,

The DWCC understands that people are waiting for updated Accessible DDBHH wireless service provider company package information.

There are two reasons why the information is not ready to be shared.

1. CRTC has not approved the plans each company has submitted for their review.
2. We are waiting for more information from two wireless companies for clear information.

Once we get this we will describe information for 4-5 companies with wireless plans in ASL & LSQ vlogs.

Thank you in advance for your patience & understanding.

~ Deaf Wireless Canada Consultative Committee (DWCC)

Seeking Tutor for Psychology and Law 12

Hi, my name is Brayden Walterhouse;

I am a college student at Vancouver Community College.

Starting in the first week of September 2017, I need a tutor who is Deaf or hearing with full of fluency of American Sign Language to help me with both Psychology 12 and Law 12 courses.

Therefore, if you would like to tutor me, you would be able to earn $35 per hour for every two hours of tutor per two days weekly. The Provincial Government would pay to you for each of your tutor period with me. The requirement of tutor would be required for three months and an half, from the early month of September to the middle month of December.

Once you let me know that you are interested in tutoring me, the colleagues working for the disability service at Vancouver Community College would talk with you detail about your tutor employment.

If you are definitely interested in tutoring me on Psychology 12 or Law 12, you can reach me by emailing me or by texting me at (778) 549-8703.

Yours truly,
Brayden Walterhouse 🙂
