Administrative assistant needed at WIDHH

Established in 1956, the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WIDHH) is a unique charity serving the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals throughout British Columbia. Our Interpreting Department is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the following position:

Administrative Assistant
Part-time, one-year contract
June 18, 2018 to June 14, 2019

 

Job Summary:
The Administrative Assistant is responsible for assisting the Head of Interpreting Services with administrative tasks (power point presentations, scheduling, department operations) and providing team support to the Medical Interpreting Services (MIS) Dispatcher and Community Interpreting Services (CIS) Coordinator. On-site training will be provided for the selected candidate.

Work Performed:

  • Assists with management of online database/scheduling/invoicing of regular and on-call interpreting bookings
  • Schedules and arranges presentations and workshops
  • Reception duties, including answering requests via email, text, skype, facetime, voice phone, TTY, and fax
  • Assists with drop in clients for English-ASL translation of documents
  • Supports clients on use of video relay services
  • Provides data entry support for MIS and CIS

Qualifications:

  • Must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Minimum two years client service experience with the public, Deaf, Deaf-Blind and/or hard of hearing individuals preferred
  • In-depth sensitivity and knowledge about Deaf culture, Deaf-Blind needs, and the communication modalities of hard of hearing individuals
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Responsible and positive work attitude
  • Organized with excellent attention to detail
  • Presents professionally and is respectful of confidentiality requirements of position

Snapping Barriers Art Show, proudly supported by the Northshore Disability Resource Centre

The Snapping Barrier Project is a mixed media project, where disabled participants created artwork that captured access barriers in the communities they live in. The purpose of this project was to showcase how access barriers affect the disabled community personally on a daily basis, be it physically, socially or emotionally.  

The Art show will be at Lynn Valley Centre – North Vancouver. Room: Unit 129-C –just past the shoe repair and elevator. The art show will be open June 11th, 13th, and 15th between 1:00 pm – 4:00pm.

This is a great learning and educational opportunity! Someone will be available to guide viewers through the show and answer questions

Please come support your local disabled community and enjoy some beautiful art!

Rhode Island-based writer Todd McLeish has been writing about wildlife and environmental issues for more than 20 years. His 4th and newest book is The Return of The Sea Otter’

In his newest book, Todd McLeish journeys along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska to track the status, health, habits, personality, and viability of sea otters – the appealing animals unique to the Pacific that were hunted to near extinction in the 18th and 19th centuries. Todd shares stories of his adventures and outlines the natural history of these adorable marine mammals – often seen floating on their backs and holding hands – that play a vital role in maintaining the health of the kelp forest ecosystem.

The DeafBlind Community Joins Seniors Week Activities at the Roundhouse

The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre in Vancouver is hosting Seniors Week – “Older and Creating It”  with daily activities from June 4 to 8, 2018.
On Thursday, June 7, the 2018 Deaf-Blind Awareness Fair will be sharing the Exhibition Hall space with other Seniors Week activities. Several community groups will have display tables with information and activities for seniors and all ages.
The Seniors Art Exhibit will have several artworks that can be touched and explored by blind and Deaf-Blind visitors.  Come and see how Seniors and Deaf-Blind members of the community use creativity to add ‘spark’ to their lives!

An interpreter will be provided for anyone who is not fluent in ASL.

SRV Canada VRS coming to Vancouver, BC next weekend May 31-June 2, 2018

Hello everyone, want to let everyone know important events for this weekend- Thursday, Friday and Saturday May 31, June 1, June 2nd.  On Thursday, SRV Canada VRS coming to the deaf school for parents, children, also the dorm. 

Friday evening, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at Douglas College. We will have short presentation and then will have technical support and customer support, the team will support all of us. This is your OPPORTUNITY to bring your iphones, smartphones, iPad, tablets, laptop, etc as some of you struggling to get the app to work, or struggling to register for SRV Canada VRS . The VRS team will work with you on to ensure everything working normal on ur iPhones, smartphones, iPads, tablets, and laptop. 

On June 2nd, as you all are aware of our annual event of Deaf Deaf World at Vancouver Community College which they will have an booth there, if you have missed Friday evening, you can grab bring ur iPad, iPhone, smartphones, tablets, or laptop to their booth for technical support. 

For Friday evening, if you are planning to attend, please email me to confirm your name on the list so I can pass them onto the SRV Canada VRS team so they know what to expect and how many people coming, ready to support us. Thank you!

Speech Instructor Training in Chilliwack

Speech Instructor Training offered Aug 30 –  Sept 3, 2018 in Chilliwack

 

There is room for more potential instructors for this training class.  If you have taken speechreading classes, have experience with audiology/speech pathology or Deaf education, you might be well qualified to take this 5-day Speechreading Instructor training to teach Let’s Talk (LT).

 

This program was developed by experienced hard of hearing speechreading instructors throughout Canada through the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA).  There is a growing demand for speech reading training among adults and seniors experiencing hearing loss.

 

Leslee Scott is CHHA’s Western Instructor to provide instructional training for this program.  If you are interested and available to take this training on Aug 30-Sept 3, 2019, please contact Leslee at leslee@idhhc.ca  .
