Mental Health Counsellor Deaf Well Being Program

ABOUT THE JOB:

Within the context of a client-centred care model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and vision and values of the organization, works as part of a community interdisciplinary team to provide mental health counseling, support and information services to deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind people utilizing a health promotion model. Establishes, maintains and enhances relationships based on respect and understanding with deaf, hard of hearing and deaf blind clients; assists clients to maintain stability and wellness, and provides mental health support, intervention and referral services as required. Provides supportive counseling using American Sign Language or other communication modes preferred by the client. Collaborates, consults and builds linkages with organizations, agencies and service providers for coordination and integration of mental health plans. Aids clients’ access to services and co-facilitates group sessions. Participates in continuing education, prepares and maintains client records, maintains knowledge in mental health issues, and participates in quality improvement activities.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Baccalaureate in an Allied Health Discipline from a recognized program.
  • Experience working with deaf, hard of hearing and/or deaf-blind individuals and their families.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License. Travel will require the use of a personal vehicle.
  • Experience working with Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and hard of hearing a must.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language required.
  • JOB SPECIFICS:

    Status: Temporary Full-Time
    Start date: As Soon as Possible to March 31, 2010
    Salary: $27.18 to $33.88 per hour

    This is an action-packed week for Deaf signing children and youth that are motivated to improve their reading skills. Certified teacher and family literacy specialist Alayna Smith and certified teacher Kirsten Hagemoen will be working on literacy development.

    We will also have support from some Deaf College/University students. This 7 day program (including Saturday & Sunday) will give deaf children (that use sign as their primary mode of communication) a boost in their literacy development.

    When: Saturday, July 25th to Friday, July 31st (7 days)
    Hours: 10:00 am – 2:30 pm
    Ages: 8-16 years old

    You will learn how to golf better by a certified professional golf instructor. Interpreter provided. You will spend time at the driving range, practice your putting, chipping and playing golf on a Par 3 course.

    A method of animation in which clay figures are filmed using stop-motion photography. Do you have an idea for a movie? Have you ever wanted to make your own movie like “Chicken Run”?

    You will learn how to create your own storyboard. You will design your own set and characters(s). You will operate digital video equipment with a Mac laptop.

    When: Monday, July 20th to Wednesday, July 22nd (3 day)

    DYT Family Summer Immersion 2009

    A week long program offered by Services for Family and Community Development. Families with children ages 5 to 19 who use sign language for all or part of their communication are invited to come together to share, to learn, and to connect with one another!

    Sign language classes, education workshops, activities and outings maximize both parent and child learning. Parents and children will participate in some activities together using the learn-together philosophy and other activities will be focused on parents only/children only.

    We will also have some awesome DYT staff working with us this week! This week promises to be fun-filled as we will provide creative learning opportunities as well as chances tot connect with other families from all over British Columbia.

    B.C. Disability Games will be hosted in Maple Ridge, B.C. from Wednesday July 22 to Sunday July 26, 2009.

    BCDSF will continue with these core sports: Golf, 5 pin bowling, 10 pin bowling, and Swimming.

    This is our opportunity as a community to come together and celebrate the spirit, the courage, the determination and the achievement of these extraordinary athletes.

    Deaf Youth Summer Camp August 2009

    Camp Flyer

    BC Deaf Sports Federation is hosting a deaf youth sports camp this year with Deaf Youth Today (DYT).

    The sports camp will be held at Queensborough Community Centre in New Westminster from August 17th-21st, 2009.

    The camp will run Monday to Thursday from 9:00-12:00 for ages 7-12 and 12:00-3:00 for ages 13-18.

    On Friday, everyone (ages 7-18) will come from 9:00-3:00, allowing time to take a trip to the new Moody Park Outdoor Pool nearby.

    The cost of the camp is $45.00 and the registration deadline is August 1st, 2009.
