Exciting news!

Derek Sweeting is looking for GVAD past and current members to share with him stories, memories, and photos of GVAD’s history. Through this research Derek will be producing a book about GVAD’s past from 1926-2001. Derek looks forward to any memories you would like to share.

Also,

Eugeniu Televco is looking to start a GVAD history museum, which may be set up at WIDHH in the future. Eugeniu is looking for a variety of items. Example; old technology(hearing devices, tty’s,etc.), flyers, photos, videos, etc. Do you have anything you would like to donate to a GVAD museum?

Filmmaking Workshop

0

During the week of August 17-21, 2009, the Deaf Culture Centre and the Canada Council for the Arts are co-sponsoring a “De’VIA Filmmaking Workshop” open to only twenty people from across Canada, between the ages of 18 and 24. I have attached a .PDF package, which includes the flyer, the schedule, brief biographies of the presenters, and the application.

Throughout the week, participants will have opportunities to analyze De’VIA elements and learn how to reflect the De’VIA philosophy in short films that they will complete by the end of the week. This is a very exciting opportunity for young rising Deaf filmmakers to hone their skills and to network with fellow Deaf filmmakers, as well as receiving advice from experts in the field. Last, but not least, participants will be able to show their film during a showcase open to the community on Friday evening, August 21 — and take a copy of their film home with them!

Remember, only twenty Deaf filmmakers will be able to participate, so apply now!

If you have any questions or issues with opening/viewing the file, please do not hesitate to let me know.

CRTC – June 16, 2009

From the CRTC website today:

June 16, 2009 – Chairman of CRTC said this in a speech today

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/news/speeches/2009/s090616.htm

June 16, 2009 – Chairman of CRTC said this in a speech today:

Accessibility
Let me turn next to the accessibility of communications services to persons with disabilities. As today’s communications technology evolves, we have more tools than ever before to participate in society. However, those tools are only useful if they are accessible to us.

The communications system must respond to the needs of all Canadians, including the more than four million Canadians that have a disability. Moreover, if we look ahead a few short years, it is evident that the communications needs of baby boomers will also change as they age.
We recently held a comprehensive proceeding on this issue that included a public hearing. The proceeding was unique in that it considered accessibility in light of both the Broadcasting Act and the Telecommunications Act. I am sure we will see more of these converged hearings in the future.

We have listened to input and advice on issues ranging from: captioning and described video; consumer service and support; access to wireless services; emergency services; and relay services involving the interposition of a live operator.

We expect to issue our decision on accessibility later this month. It will address reasonable accommodations that can be implemented to reduce barriers to the access of telecom and broadcasting services, while taking into account the economic reality.

Thanks to Henry Vlug for sharing!
