Deaf Literacy Initiative Survey
The Deaf Literacy Initiative is doing research trying to find the answers to this question:
Why are so many Deaf and Deafblind Canadians unemployed or underemployed?
We have developed a survey that will help us get the information we need to answer this question.
Please fill out the survey and help us get others to fill it out as well.
We would be thrilled if you helped us promote this survey. Your support is extremely valuable as it will help us to answer our research question, and help Deaf adults across Canada improve their Essential Skills and employment opportunities.
We cannot succeed without your support.
The questions in the survey are asked in both ASL and English.
Please commit to promoting the survey. Encourage everyone you know, especially members of the Deaf community, to complete the survey. Our goal is a minimum of 30 responses from Deaf adults and 30 hearing adults in each province. With your help, we will be able to achieve this goal.
Please contact Jennifer Best – Project Manager, jennifer@deafliteracy.ca,
if you have any questions.
Warmest regards,
Jennifer & Bruce

Douglas College Interpreting Program Faculty Announcement
Douglas College Staff Announcement Video Attachment
As you have already heard, Karen Malcolm will soon be retiring from her teaching position at Douglas College after twenty-one years with the interpreting program. We are very sad to see her go, but we hope she will enjoy her future prospects, of which she has many!
As a result of our search for this position, we are very pleased to announce the new faculty member in the Program of Sign Language Interpretation is Sara MacFayden. She will join us starting this Fall 2010.
Sara brings to the program twenty-five years of teaching experience in field-related topics and has extensive experience presenting workshops. In 2008, she completed her Masters in Adult Education at SFU. Along with her academic accomplishments and years of teaching experience, Sara has twenty-six years of interpreting experience and holds an AVLIC Certificate of Interpretation. She is well known and well-respected in both the local interpreting and Deaf communities. We couldn’t be more lucky than to have her join our team!
Sara joins a strong group of instructors at Douglas who have a proven track record for having the ability to work well together as a team, and a history of supporting the Deaf and interpreting community in general. Perhaps most importantly, Sara also portrays the empathy, understanding and patience required to guide students through this demanding two year program. The team Sara is joining is comprised of Cheryl Palmer, Barb Mykle-Hotzon, Nigel Howard, Rhys McCormick, and Boyd McWilliam, our Program Technician. I think it goes without saying that we will miss Karen terribly, and we still miss Dave since his untimely death, however we are confident that we will be able to maintain the high standards which have made the Douglas College interpreting program a leader in the education of sign language interpreters.
We hope those of you in the Deaf and interpreting communities will continue to support us as you have done so ably and so generously in the past. Your willingness to share your time, your experience and your wisdom with our students is essential to the ongoing success of our program, and we sincerely thank you for your contributions!
