Are you interested in helping a group of young girls (age 8-11) develop their talents, values, and give them a sense of diversity by teaching them some ASL? The location is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (41st Ave West near Cambie) On March 8th, 2011 for 45-60 mins in the evening.

Celebrate Leona Parr-Hamel’s life
The Celebration of Life service for Leona will be held as follows:
Massey Theatre

Celebrate Leona Parr-Hamel’s life
On Sunday December 12th, members of the Interpreting and Braille Services Department at VCC bid a deeply sad farewell to their friend and colleague, Leona Parr-Hamel, a truly remarkable and beautiful spirit who left this world far too soon after a short but valiant battle with cancer.
Leona graduated from the Douglas College Sign Language Interpreting Program in 1989. During the next two decades she served the Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-Blind communities with an endless supply of passion, dedication and professionalism. Fortunately for us, Leona also brought her love of interpreting to students at VCC and in October 2008, she joined the college as a permanent employee. Leona thoroughly enjoyed being part of our college and often commented how grateful she was to be part of the VCC community.
Leona came to work every day with a smile and a delightfully contagious laugh that brightened everyone’s day. She was all about giving of oneself, of teamwork and how best to serve our students. Her legacy will be her immeasurable love of interpreting, her profound respect for the communities she served, her warmth and sensitivity, her positive and genuine nature, her generosity of spirit and the limitless joy she brought to everyone and anyone who called her friend, colleague or family.
Leona was a devoted wife, and loving mother, an adored sister and aunt, a caring daughter and a true friend. She will be sadly missed by those who were so very fortunate to have known her.
The Interpreting and Braille Services Department is inviting the college community to celebrate Leona’s contribution to VCC on Tuesday December 14th between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. in building B room 1223. If you’d like to drop by, have a cup of coffee, or leave a card for the family, please feel free to do so. Cards of condolence for the family can be dropped off at the IBS office until Friday December 17th. You may also post on FriendsofLeona Parr-Hamel on Facebook.
A community event to honour and celebrate Leona will take place in the upcoming weeks. Details will be provided to the college community.
GVAD Board Meeting
There will be a GVAD Board meeting in the basement of the WIDHH building at 2125 7th Avenue West in Vancouver on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 6:00 pm. The public is welcome to watch the board meeting but is asked not to participate in it. There will be a brief break for the public to make comments or ask questions. Because of the time restraints, there will be no public discussion. Requests for deaf interpreters (DI) for deaf-blind citizens should be sent to vandeaf@telus.net.

Message from WAVLI President
Many WAVLI member will have already heard this news via text message, Facebook, phone call, or in person.
It is with a sense of great professional and personal loss that I let WAVLI members know that, after a brief, valiant fight with cancer, Leona Parr-Hamel has passed away.
Leona was a pillar in the Vancouver Interpreting and Deaf communities.
My last professional discussion with Leona showed her depth of caring for this profession; a direct quote “For WAVLI, I would be willing to do just about anything”. And that is what we have seen Leona do time and again. She is already missed!!
The many comments from her family and friends have been tied to Leona’s laugh, her infectious sense of fun, and her supportiveness to all those she met.

“We want to let everyone know that there will be a service to honour Leona, we expect do it very early in January. Exact date not yet decided, and other details need to be worked out (where, time, etc). We will post info here over the next few days to let everyone know.

Folks can drop off anything they wish at the VCC Broadway campus (former King Edward campus). Pls use the main entry off Broadway. Signs will then lead you to the Interpreting Services office.”
