Study: Cell Phone Based Emergency Services

0

Participants needed for a study of Cell Phone Based Emergency Services

Researchers at the Neil Squire Society in cooperation with the Canadian Association of the Deaf are conducting a study to look at how “911” emergency calls and emergency disaster alerts on cellular phones can be made more accessible.

The goal of this project is to get input from actual cell phone users on how the next generation of emergency services should be designed to ensure accessibility before they are released. Your feedback will be used to make industry and government aware of the unique needs of the Deaf community.

We are currently looking for people who are deaf and currently use cellular phones and would be interested in attending a focus group or completing a brief survey.

Eligible participants will have a choice of attending one of the focus groups being held in locations across Canada or answering questions in a survey. The focus groups will typically last 2 hours and consist of 6 to 8 people. There will be a brief presentation and an open question and

answer session. Focus groups will be held in late October/early November and participants will be paid $65.00.

Sign Language Rights Petition

Celebrate International Week of Sign Language Rights!

International Congress on Education of the Deaf (ICED) Petition On-Line Now @ WFD!

World Federation of the Deaf is calling individuals to sign an online petition, New Era Document, which rejects the resolutions of the 1880 Milan Congress that banned the use of sign language from educational programs for deaf children. This is a call upon all nations and people of the world to remember history and ensure that educational programs accept and respect all languages, including sign languages, and all forms of communication.

The New Era Document was first presented and signed by hundreds of people in the 21st International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED) in Vancouver, Canada in July 2010.

To sign the petition visit www.petitions24.com/wfd

International Week of the Deaf is celebrated this week from 20 to 26 September 2010 throughout the world by individuals and national associations of the Deaf.
