DESJARDINS FINANCIAL SECURITY INVESTMENTS INC.

REGISTERED DISABILITY SAVINGS PLAN FOR DEAF & HARD OF HEARING PEOPLE

ABOUT RDSP:
The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) plan is a good option for the Deaf
and Hard of Hearing individuals who plan to save money to make their long-term
financial future more comfortable. The federal government provides financial
support through the Canada Disability Savings Grant (CDSG) and Canada Disability
Savings Bond (CDSB) programs.

The RDSP will benefit any deaf and hard of hearing individual who has the
disability tax credit certificate, is less than 60 years of age, and is
a Canadian resident.

ABOUT CDSG:
Qualified individuals may put money into an RDSP account to attract the CDSG of
up to $3,500 each year until December 31st the year in which they turn 49 or up
to the maximum lifetime CDSG available in the amount of $70,000.

Qualified individuals with any kind of income can apply for the RDSP.
Even families or single individuals with a net family income over $85,414
can earn up to $1000 in CDSG.

ABOUT CDSB:
This program is for lower-income families and singles individuals who have less
than $42,707 in net family income.

These lower-income families/singles can apply for CDSB without putting any money
into the RDSP account and qualify for a bond up to $1,000 each year until 49 years
of age subject to the maximum lifetime CDSB available amount of $20,000.

Under the Canada Disability Savings Bond program, individuals are not required
to make a contribution or deposit including those receiving support programs such
as the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). The Ontario government has
exempt assets inside an RDSP from affecting an individual’s ODSP support payments
meaning Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals have a great option for saving for
their long-term financial future.

WANTED: Salaried Caregiver

This is an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of the support network for a middle aged woman. This is a key role in maintaining and building on a “good life” for KT. ?KT is a very active and intelligent woman with a great curiosity about the world and people. She has an excellent sense of humour and playfulness. KT has some fears which at times interfere with showing people her wonderful qualities. KT needs someone who can keep pace with her active life and help her to maintain and expand her social network. She also needs someone who will be able to make her feel safe, who acknowledges her intelligence and supports her to be as independent as possible. You will be living in KT’s home and need to respect her personal space in the house.

Good coping skills in relation to your emotional regulation would be important for your own self care. A good personal network is key to maintaining your health. ?As a cornerstone in KT’s support network, it will be crucial to be an honest communicator and to be willing to take time to communicate with the key people in KT’s life. A collaborative style of working is also important to working as a part of a team. ?This position is best suited for a single caregiver, however, a couple would be considered, based on a “goodness of fit” or right relationship”.

Compensation will be a tax-free salary with room and board. KT will have staffed support Tuesday-Thursday 9am-3pm, Friday 9am-2pm, Saturday 9am-9pm and overnight, and Sunday 9am-9pm

Job Posting – CAD

The Canadian Association of the Deaf has a part-time position available for a Project Director.

“Strengthening Deaf Girls’ and Young Women’s Economic Prosperity” is a new national project funded by a contribution from Status of Women Canada, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. Its goals are to increase awareness of barriers that can prevent Deaf girls and young women from fulfilling their economic potential; engage, educate and network with community partner(s); and apply what has been learned to the delivery of girl-led action-oriented and community-based activities.

The CAD’s office is located in downtown Ottawa; however, the duties of the Project Director can be carried out remotely; it is not necessary for applicants to live in or relocate to Ottawa. The position is for 15 hours/week for 17 months (February 4th, 2013, to June 27th, 2014). There is a possibility of expanding the hours if additional funding is obtained. Due to the nature of this position, preference will be given to women who are Deaf.

Canada VRS Update

svrs_masthead_2
Sorenson Communications was proud to participate in the recent Video Relay Service (VRS) trial in Canada. The trial has now ended, and the Canadian Radio-Television & Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the regulatory agency for broadcasting and telecommunications in Canada, has still not taken action to set up VRS in Canada. Unfortunately, this means all videophones in Canada will be turned off, and VP service will be shut down on Jan. 31, 2013.

We urge you to work with the BCVRS committee in communicating the importance of VRS to the CRTC. BCVRS can be reached at bcvrsc@gmail.com. You can also find the BCVRS committee on facebook, by ‘friending’ Bcvrs Cmtee. You can also follow them in twitter at @BCVRS

You can submit a signed or spoken video with your thoughts through email to the CRTC, by e-mailing:

To:    jean-pierre.blais@crtc.gc.ca (CRTC Chairman, Jean-Pierre Blais)
Cc:    christian.paradis@parl.gc.ca (Minister of Industry, Christian Paradis)
Cc:    bcvrsc@gmail.com (BCVRS committee)

Please remember, the videophone you currently use will no longer work after Jan. 31, 2013.
