Looking for an Adoptive Family

Karly

Birth date: 2007                                    Ethnocultural Background: Metis

Karly is an endearing, lovable young girl who needs a family to call her own. She is a happy child who enjoys being around people; she is currently part of an active family with three other children. She participates in a number of activities such as biking, shopping, and running. Karly also likes music, lap games, movement, trampoline, dancing, and swimming. She loves to laugh and has a good sense of humour.

Born three months premature, Karly has significant developmental delays. She has Cerebral Palsy and is blind, although has some light perception. She uses hearing aids in both ears and uses a wheel chair, standing frame, and bicycle walker to get around. Karly tries really hard to learn new skills and can control some movements with support by a caregiver. With determination, she has learned to use over 50 words – she lets you know she understands you by smiling and getting excited. A smile from Karly is a sweet reward indeed! With a multisensory approach to learning, Karly’s communication skills continue to improve.

Karly has a large number of professionals involved in monitoring and assisting with her daily functioning, learning, and development. They all love to work with her!  She is actively engaged in the classroom answering questions, loves story time, tries really hard to learn new skills, and is described as a bit of a “class clown”. She continues to make great strides with the love, support and care provided to her. With a skilled and devoted permanent family, Karly has the chance to reach her full potential.

Karly is of Aboriginal decent, and currently resides in the lower mainland; however non-Aboriginal families outside of this region will be considered. Openness with a sibling is expected. Come and meet Karly!

Radical Accessibility Recognition & Celebration

Save the date, ’cause on Saturday June 8th 2013, 7pm, at Gallery Gachet, we’re going to be celebrating, honouring, and giving respect where it’s due to the folks behind the Radical Access Mapping Project, the Vancouver Queer ASL Club, and other radical accessibility groups in Vancouver and beyond!

Often groups working to make this broadly non-accessible world more accessible do so for free or very little money. They pour countless hours of sweat, tears, blood, and bones into making this world a radder, gentler, & safer place for us all with little to no acknowledgement.

So It’s time to pony up and give what we can! Got a fiver you can throw down? Wanna make goodies for a bake sale? Show off your artistic skills & make a poster? Donate something for a raffle? Volunteer at the door and/or (sober) bar? Well, June 8th is the date to do all of that and more!

This event is taking place on the un-ceded Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-waututh, and Squamish peoples. Our work is grounded on this land, sits firmly in the reality of ongoing processes of colonization and attempts at erasure, and is inspired and informed by the resistance of indigenous people here and across Turtle Island. We’re talking about who has access to what, who designs, defines and is left out of our communities; and whether it’s a staircase or a border, we’re doing all of that on stolen land. In/accessibility and colonialism are intimately connected.

This event is happening in the DTES, a community facing ongoing processes of vilification and gentrification. Please be respectful of the folks who live and work in the neighbourhood, and the spirit of resistance that lives here.

Wheelchair accessible and ASL interpretation provided. Please check out our facebook page for more details and hope to see you there!!

BCVRS Submission to CRTC 2013-155

0

Hello BC Deaf community,

The BCVRS has been working very hard since CRTC’s announcement March 27th, to decipher the technical language and to help the BC and Canadian Deaf community participate in CRTC’s Telecom Notice of Consultation 2013-155 with both document & hands on assistance.
We have hosted several drop-ins, helped people write their letters, and make video comments and submissions all at the same time we had a sub-committee team of of Susan Masters, Ava Hawkins, Lisa Anderson-Kellett, Jeffrey Beatty and Lisz Keallen. Some researched and collaborated, some just helped with the task of editing the document. Thanks all to the work you contributed to this document.
Here is the fruits of our work, which is now public, via our online submission last Friday. Click here for BCVRS’ submitted document.
BCVRS also wants to express their appreciation and thanks to all the Committees and Deaf communities across the country who hosted town-halls, drop-ins, and assisted our public and Deaf Community to ensure everyone’s “voice” was put forward in the optional formats (letter or video). ~hands waving~
If you have not yet written your letter or done your video submission, you better hurry, only 3 days left – check out: http://bcvrs.ca/2013/05/step-by-step-instructions/
Cheers,

REQUEST TO MAKE AN “ORAL” (SIGNED) PRESENTATION

  1. The Canadian Association of the Deaf (CAD) respectfully requests two representatives (Frank Folino, President effectively on July 14, 2013 and Jim Roots, Executive Director) to appear to make an “oral” (actually signed) presentation at the public hearing in Gatineau. We would like to present our key messages and recommendations on a national Video Relay Service (VRS). CAD, as in previous public hearings, wishes to make reply comments and address any concerns or questions that the Commission may have.

SUMMARY

  1. Canadian Association of the Deaf is in support of the Commission requiring the provision of VRS on a national basis for both the English/ASL and French/LSQ communities.   CAD has reviewed and participated in the Mission Consulting Feasibility Study which has been filed as part of these proceedings and is in general support of the findings and recommendations presented therein.
