Seminar on Sign Language and Audism

Tues July 19, 4-6pm. @ VIVO Media Arts Centre (2625 Kaslo Street, Kaslo St, Vancouver, BC V5M 3G9)

Presentation/seminar on American Sign Language (ASL), its grammar and history. In this seminar, discussion about misguidance and oppression of Deaf Culture will take place as it is critical to question domination of power, identity subordination and inequality of the human rights that Deaf people experience on daily basis. By criticizing and conversing on violence that Deaf citizens face, we hope to define Deaf identity and strengthen their voice.

Wedn July 20. 4-6pm. VIVO Media Arts Centre (2625 Kaslo Street, Kaslo St, Vancouver, BC V5M 3G9)

Free public workshop on ASL. Learn how to introduce yourself, discuss leisure activities and learn about sign language culture. By the end of this class you should be able to engage in simple conversations.

We are offering ASL if folks let us know 1 week before the event.

-ILL NANA Dance Workshop: 2 hour dance and movement workshop that aims to create an affirming space for LGBTTIQQ2S Black/Indigenous/mixed/people of color with varying body sizes and abilities to participate, with the belief that we all can dance and have the right to dance. Please note that is event is exclusively for Indigenous/Black/mixed/people of color who are also LGBATQ+.

-Do you need ASL? Please register to let us know by Tues, July 28. If no requests have been received by Tues, July 28, ASL will be cancelled.

-Pinkwashing Workshop: What is pinkwashing and what does it have to do with Palestine? Let’s talk about it. This workshop will introduce you to the basics of 100+ years of Palestinian struggle against Zionism and Israeli settler colonialism.

Work-Able Internship Program for Persons with Disabilities

Work-Able Internship Program for Persons with Disabilities

Salary: $1,653.04 Bi-weekly

Temporary Position from September 6, 2016 to September 1, 2017

Work-Able is a twelve month BC Public Service work experience program for recent post-secondary graduates who self-identify as having a disability. This program provides learning, coaching and mentorship throughout the internship and interns will gain valuable skills and public service experience.

To be eligible for the Work-Able Internship Program you must:

  • Self-identify as a person with a disability;
  • Reside in B.C.; and
  • Have completed the degree requirements for an under-graduate or graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution between the dates of April 1, 2013 and September 5, 2016.

This is a challenging and rewarding program where you will gain an increased understanding of public service roles, and learn about possible future employment opportunities with the provincial government. Visit our Career Page to find out more.

Reverend Bob Rumball (1929-2016)

The Reverend Robert Rumball passed away peacefully on June 1, 2016. He is recognized as the individual who had the greatest impact on the quality of life, human rights and services for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Special Needs community in the past century. His work began in 1955 in a downtown Toronto church and has grown to serve countless people in need across the province.
