DWCC posts third wireless ASL terminology video

The Deaf Wireless Canada Committee (DWCC) and CAD-ASC are pleased to release a series of videos, a total of 32 videos in ASL and LSQ.

The purpose of these videos are to increase Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing ASL and LSQ users’ understanding of wireless terminology.

– What does data plan mean?
– What does voice credit mean?
– How many MB are in a GB?

We will release one video every week Tuesday at 10am. PST, one video in ASL, and one video in LSQ.

This position, Client Support Associate, involves working in varied office tasks including, but not limited to:

> Writing including emails, articles, fundraising and general letters
> Clerical including scanning, copying, filing
> Researching information and leads
> Updating and maintaining customer relation management (CRM) software
> Assist with bookkeeping tasks

Will provide training but prefer applicants with prior experience of working in clerical settings.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE SPECIALIST

OVERVIEW:

The Provincial Outreach Program Deaf and Hard of Hearing (POPDHH) focuses on collaboration with school districts in the province in meeting the needs of all Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners.  Through collaborative consultation POPDHH supports educational teams in addressing the unique communication and learning styles of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.  To reach every student’s potential, POPDHH promotes goals of language development, literacy, numeracy, cognitive development, self-advocacy, and self-confidence in becoming responsible, global citizens.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the general direction of the Vice-Principal, provides leadership and work direction to the POPDHH, providing expertise and services.
  • Represents the Vice-Principal and participates on committees or meetings as required and offers input in all matters concerning PODDHH.
  • Provides oversight to the students with documented barriers to accessing curriculum through auditory channels alone and supports their development of expressive and receptive language skills in ASL.
  • Provides services to students in person and through video conferencing with an emphasis on language acquisition using a bilingual approach to language learning.
  • Organizes professional development to build ASL skills and appreciation of bilingual educational approaches in educational teams.
  • Provides support and instruction to Education Assistants, facilitating group immersion or conversation groups and provides resources to support their ongoing skill development.
  • Communicates with educational teams and students in English and American Sign Language, and shares knowledge of ASL, Deaf culture and history.
  • Conducts American Sign Language assessments (receptive and expressive), for students and staff.
  • Collaborates with team to create resource videos in ASL for Educational Teams and student use.
  • Coordinates the organization of Provincial events such as student initiatives, videoconferences, media and technology services.
  • Collaborates with partner agencies to provide seamless services in the community.

  • Develops and edits vlogs of provincial events and initiatives created for the distribution to all school districts and community stakeholders.
  • Maintains the technology services (updating software, checking a variety of materials for accuracy and completeness).
  • Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Native ASL user with a Bachelor Degree in American Sign Language (ASL), ASL Cultural Studies, Curriculum or equivalent courses.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with children in a K-12 public education environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; experience in the preparation of formal reports, oral/written presentations and statistical analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer skills and related software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, evaluate performance and determine and carry out corrective/disciplinary action.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent action in the performance of all duties.

FIGHTING CHANCE PRODUCTIONS CLOSES HISTORIC 10TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON WITH ONE OF THE LONGEST RUNNING BROADWAY MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

 Fighting Chance Productions closes its ground-breaking 10th anniversary season with the Tony and Pulitzer Prize Award-winning musical A Chorus Line featuring performers from some of the best training institutions across Canada including Capilano University, Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, Sheridan College and the Canadian College for the Performing Arts.

“A Chorus Line is one of the greatest show business musicals ever,” says artistic director Ryan Mooney, “and our production featuring graduates and current students from some of the finest theatre training grounds in North America should do justice to this historic show.”.

In 1974 director and choreographer Michael Bennett conducted a series of interviews with chorus members from Broadway shows. His idea was to create a musical honouring those nameless dancers whose careers were often dedicated to playing bit parts and supporting the superstars. From those interviews A Chorus Line was born and has now been performed all over the world by hundreds of thousands of artists.

Fighting Chance’s version has director and choreographer Rachael Carlson at the helm, a Canadian College of Performing Arts and Capilano University graduate. Rachael choreographed Fighting Chance’s successful mounting of Cats which garnered rave reviews as well as sold out houses. Arielle Ballance, a newcomer to the Vancouver theatre scene, serves as music director.

“Rachael aims to honour the original source material, with a few twists,” says Mooney, “Rachael was instrumental in the success of Cats last season, bringing knowledge and ability to her work as choreographer but also a keen eye to where the original could be improved upon. Audiences reacted to her incredible work and I’m sure they’ll have the same feelings when they see what she’s done with A Chorus Line.”.

Featuring songs such as At the Ballet, What I Did for Love and the iconic One, Fighting Chance Productions’ presentation of A Chorus Line will be perfect for those hoping to discover this musical or those wanting to introduce their loved ones to it for the first time.
