Signing Support Workers needed by July 1, 2014
MSJ Society supports a Deaf individual who lives a life of dignity in Duncan. We are looking for one or two more signing support workers to join our team.
1. Live-In Signing Good Neighbour. The current Good Neighbour is moving after 7 years of raising her family in our comfortable, well-maintained 3 bedroom upper duplex in a nice neighbourhood in Duncan. You may be the perfect new Good Neighbour. The individual you will help support lives independently in the lower duplex. You and your family will live independently in the upper duplex. Your role within the MSJ Society team is to develop a positive neighbourly relationship with the individual you support and to provide one to two hours of support per day by (a) being home most evenings and at night, (b) monitoring health and safety through a neighbourly check-in each evening and morning and (c) occasionally providing organizational and problem-solving support. In exchange MSJ Society will cover your rent, heat, water and hydro and will give you respite-breaks one weekend per month, two weeks in the summer, and a week at Christmas.
2. Signing Home and Community Support Worker: We are looking for someone to provide about 8 to 12 hours of support per week (one or two afternoons per week plus 4 to 6 hours most weekends). Responsibilities are to provide tactful and relaxed background support combined with some practical support focused accomplishing activities of daily living, participating in Deaf and Hearing community events, and participating in gentle leisure, recreation and social adventures with you, your family and your friends. Rate of pay is $12 to $17 per hour depending on your education and experience.
We are looking for people who value communication, supported inter-dependence, mutual respect, caring relationships, and equality and who are already fluent signers. We may hire one person for both positions or two different people. We may consider someone who is a beginning and intermediate level signer if you have all the other skills and qualities we are looking for and if you are excited about the opportunity to dedicate many unpaid hours of your time to taking ASL and Deaf culture courses and tutoring in order to become fluent.
Do you share the values described above? Do you think you could fulfill the responsibilities involved in being a Live-In Good Neighbour or Signing Support Worker or both? Are you already a fluent signer or are you willing to put in the many hours of unpaid time, study and practice required to become fluent? If so the next step is to email us to tell us about yourself and how you might be a good match for our team. We will start our screening, information sharing, and short-listing process with anyone who appears to have the skills and qualities we are looking for. Although these positions do not start until July, we want to interview in March and and bring new team members on board by April so that we can develop a plan for you to get to know everyone at MSJ Society, get oriented and make other preparations.
