The Langley School District is accepting applications for SEA – Autism/Interpreter. Reporting to the
Teacher/Administrator, the Special Education Assistant – Autism/Interpreter acts as an interpreter between the
deaf and hard of hearing students, the integrated classroom teacher, and hearing students and other hearing
school personnel, and provides assistance and support in the implementation of individual education programs for students with special needs.
We hire Special Education Assistants who have completed certificate programs at the following institutes:
•Kwantlen Polytechnic
•Surrey College
•Stenberg College
•Delta DTAC Program
•Douglas College
•Langara College
We will consider applications from individuals who have completed Special Education Assistant programs elsewhere and have school-
based experience.
Required qualifications:
? Grade 12 graduation and possession of a Special Education Teacher Assistant Certificate, or an
equivalent combination of training and experience.
? Completion of the Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders Training on
Autism Spectrum Disorders and Applied Behaviour Analysis.
? Possession of an Interpreter Training Diploma
? Proficiency in Manually Coded English and American Sign Language
? Competency in both American Sign Language/English, and English/American Sign Language
interpretation.
? Knowledge of deafness and the deaf culture.
? Emergency First Aid Certificate desirable including sufficient medical knowledge to effectively
cope with seizures.
? Ability to assess and meet individual students interpreting needs.
? Ability to be flexible to meet the varying academic, social, emotional and behavioural needs of
students.
? Knowledge of behavior management techniques and task analysis techniques.
? Ability to interact with the students in an effective manner including the ability to assess and
meet individual student’s interpreting needs.
? Ability to work collaboratively as part of an educational team.
? Ability to communicate effectively using tact, discretion and diplomacy in contacts of a difficult
or specialized nature.
? Ability to determine, judge and select appropriate course of action within limits of established
methods and procedures.
? Ability to use courtesy and tact in the explanation and discussion of information with the public,
parents, staff and students.
? Basic knowledge of computers.
? Physical ability to perform the required duties.
? Valid BC Driver’s license,
The rate of pay is $30.36 per hour
