I’d like to post for a position at Richmond Society for Community Living. This position would be ideal for someone that is hard of hearing or deaf.

35 hours weekly

Program: Woodward’s House
Job Contribution: The Intervenor provides support in all aspects of the individual’s lives, including: work. social, and recreational. The Intervener strives to create a warm and comfortable home atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment for the individuals who live there. As part of an effective team ensures the well being of each resident and provides opportunities for growth and development in response to the wishes and interests of each individual. The staff establishes and maintains relationships of trust, security and unconditional support. They provide a consistent and supportive environment. They respond with respectful and skilled personal assistance to the specific emotional and physical needs of each person and ensures that these issues do not remain barriers to community involvement. The Intervenor endeavors to involve family members, friends, volunteers, and neighbours in each person’s life. They support positive peer relationships between housemates. They play an active role in advocacy and in community awareness and education. This person is a dedicated and knowledgeable member of an organization wide support team.
Education and Experience
? Degree or Diploma in human services field preferred and six months experience working with adults who are deafblind. A person who is trained in deafblind intervention, culture, awareness and sighted guide techniques.
? An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Knowledge and Skills:
? Advanced ASL skills and other augmentative communication skills;
? Proven ability to assess and interpret human behavior accurately and respond supportively;
? Good organizational and time management skills;
? Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of the community living sector;
? Ability to work with minimal supervision and to maintain professional conduct and objectivity at all times;
? Proven ability to provide assistance in emergencies and ;
? Demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.
Additional Information and Requirements:
? Approved Criminal Record Search;
? Doctor’s Note stating you are physically and mentally able to work with people with disabilities;
? Negative TB test;
? Current (and approved) First Aid and CPR Certificate;
? WHMIS and Foodsafe Certificate required;
? This position may require use of a personal vehicle;
? This position requires Union Membership
