DOUGLAS COLLEGE IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE: ADVANCED AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE – DEAF ASL USERS AND INTERPRETERS WELCOME!

February 9th, March 9th & April 6th 2019

This workshop series provides professional interpreters and Deaf individuals an opportunity to increase ASL literacy by covering topics such as advanced ASL grammar, terminology, etc.  In addition, the workshops will cover various issues and ethical decision making when working in specific settings that include education, social service and elements of social justice.

The morning session will provide a review of foundations of ASL along with linguistics and the application of new ASL research.  The afternoon sessions will have participants analyze and practice translation and interpreting. 

Students will be able to:

  • Focus holistically on work that includes languages, cultures, skills and attitudes.
  • Perceive the difference between decisions made based on emotion, reasoning and ethics. 
  • Analyze how the decisions we make effect the interpretation as well as the consumers involved. 
  • Evaluate the impact of their decision making on the consumers of ASL interpreter services.
