My name is Leah, and I’m the new Program Manager here at ArtStarts, located on Richards and Robson in downtown Vancouver. We have just installed a new exhibition called “Movement is for Every Body” that highlights work created by B.C. student artists on accessibility in the dance world. The exhibition will launch on August 11th with a party for families and young people; we are providing ASL interpretation for this event and so I wanted to reach out to make sure that your organization was invited. From 11am – 12pm, we’ll be hosting a drop-in art activity for young people ages 12 and under and their families. From 12:30pm – 1pm, staff will share a few words about the exhibit and encourage visitors to explore the gallery and share some food! This event and all our programming at ArtStarts is by-donation; it would be wonderful if you and your Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing families are available to join us! I will also have an ASL vlog available shortly if that would be useful to spread the word to your community.
If members of your network are interested, could I trouble them to RSVP to leah@artstarts.com indicating number of Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals who will attend by Monday, August 6th? That will help me ensure we have the correct number of interpreters on-site and can meet any other access needs on site. ArtStarts is fully wheelchair accessible, though our lift cannot accommodate an adult in an electric scooter. If this event isn’t a possibility, we will be expanding ASL interpretation to our regular drop-in programming for families on Saturdays in the fall, and I’ll be happy to get that information to you once it’s available.
