My name is Somang Nam. I am a Ph.D. candidate at the Industrial
Engineering program, University of Toronto.
I am kindly requesting your help to recruit participants for a virtual
research study that I am conducting titled: Understanding the
subjective Closed Captioning quality assessment by Deaf or Hard of
Hearing viewers.
The purpose of this study is to train an AI Closed Captioning quality
evaluator, named Cappy, by teaching them human ratings for certain
captions it would ask about.
In this study, each participant will be asked to watch a set of
captioned video clips, then to report their subjective quality rating
of the CC. The entire study will be conducted on a website
(http://cappy.imdc.ca) and participants are required to join Zoom and
share screen. The study involves completing a basic demographic
information questionnaire, the rating session as described above, then
finally a short semi-structured interview on Zoom.
The participation is completely voluntary and estimated to be
completed within 1 hour. All participants will receive a small amount
of cash honorarium ($30 CAD) upon completion. Anyone interested in
this study can simply send me an email at <somang@mie.utoronto.ca>,
then we can set a scheduled meeting time on Zoom for the study. The
attached pdf file is the information and the consent form which you
can read about the study in detail.
Your help for this research will be of great importance to assist in
changing the process of CC quality assessment that D/HoH individuals
would experience.

*There will be no in-person data collection during the pandemic.
Instead, this study will be conducted virtually using Zoom. Because of
this special condition, we request to have the participants camera on
and share their screen while working on the study to replicate the
same atmosphere as if they would participate in person.
