School District No. 38 (Richmond) requires a part/full time Hearing Resource teacher to join our Learning Services Department effective February 2018 on a continuing contract. The immediate teaching assignment for the Hearing Resource teacher will be working 0.6 FTE (3 days per week) with students and if interested, TTOC’ing 2 days a week for the remainder of the 2017/2018 school year to be paid as a full time teacher. Effective September 1, 2018 the position will be full time (1.0 FTE).
The Hearing Resource Teacher will provide direct or consultative services to support deaf and hard of hearing students’ development of speech, language, cognition, audition, advocacy, and social and academic development, including directly teaching students with a hearing loss, assessing the need for and troubleshooting equipment, and providing initial and ongoing support in the development and implementation of IEP’s. In addition, the Hearing Resource Teacher will liaise with, advise, and in-service school staff and parents on educational needs related to students with a hearing loss regarding alternate teaching/classroom management strategies, language development, acoustics, amplifications, and assistive listening devices. Furthermore, the Hearing Resource Teacher will provide habilitation services to students with cochlear implants.
The successful applicant must be certified by the Ministry of Education – Teacher Regulation Branch, have a diploma in Deaf Education or a Masters Degree in Deaf Education, be certified or be eligible for certification by the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CAEDHH), and demonstrated successful and current teaching experience working with students who have hearing losses and cochlear implants.

We wish to inform you about our next Disabled Community Connection Network (DCCN) session. DCCN is a monthly communication and information group for people of all ages (16+) with any disability. This group is supported by the North Shore Disability Resource Centre and PeerNet BC.

Our next group is happening on January 18th, 4:00PM – 6:00PM. At PeerNet BC, #408-602 Hastings, Vancouver. We would be very appreciative if you could promote this session in your newsletters and on your social media-feeds.

This will be our second planning meeting for our media art project called Snapping Barriers. The mixed media art project will focus on capturing access barriers in the communities we live in. This meeting will focus on the timeline and scope of the project, as well as what the final project itself will look like.

Please come to the meeting with an idea of how you can personally capture barriers in your community. It can be through photographs, video, poems, writing, painting, drawing or any other art medium. Barriers can be physical, social or emotional. The purpose of this project to showcase how barrier affects you on a daily basis be it physically, socially or emotionally.

Note: you do not need to have anything done for the upcoming meeting, having an idea of how you are going to capture access barriers in your community is enough.

ASL Interpretation and food is provided! The space is also wheelchair accessible. Please let us know of any accommodations and dietary needs you require. Please email s.klassen@nsdrc.org or call 604-904-4088 to register.

We are very excited to inform you that the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival is going to happen from Jan 16 to Feb 4 2018.

Attached you will find an info-sheet with information on all the shows that are accessible to the Deaf and hard of hearing arts lovers. We would appreciate it if you could share the info-sheet with your contacts, include the info in newsletters, share on Facebook, print it and hang it up in a visible place, or share in any way you think helpful.

As in previous years, we are working with Piper Delores to provide ASL interpretation for Endings (and the talk back after) on January 27. We will also have ASL-interpretation for the youth academy and panel discussion on inclusion.

We are also exited to announce a new initiative: We will provide captions for Inside/Out on January 21st. We also have an exciting show from Italy with English surtitles: MDLSX.

Each year we present several shows which are accessible to the Deaf and hard of hearing community because they are very visual. One of these shows is our children’s show It’s Dark Outside, which is absolutely beautiful and completely visual. There is no verbal component whatsoever and the music is only used to underscore.

For shows where additional information on the use of sound and music could be useful we reach out to the artists and create an introduction.

Bilingual ASL-English Family Storytime is happening at the Oakridge Library. This program is conducted in American Sign Language and English. Enjoy stories, songs, rhymes, felt stories, and crafts at the library. This event is suitable for children of all ages and abilities along with their parents and caregivers. ASL interpreters will be present during the program. The program runs on Friday mornings once a month from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. The program dates are February 16, March 16, April 20, May 18. Job Description: One to one support for 16-year-old hearing impaired youth with ASD attending Neuroscience/Health Psychology Camp at UBC.

Contract Period: July 1 – 28, 2018 OR Position 1: July 1- 14 Position 2: July 15 -28

Location: UBC – Point Grey Campus

Days: Hours: 7:30am to 9pm

Successful applicant will participate in the development of the schedule and must be available and flexible based on the needs of the youth throughout the contract period.

Responsibilities:
Provide support in classroom and social settings
Break down and/or phrase tasks as needed
Give encouragement
Help stay on task/prompt to begin task
Support through transitions and schedule changes
Redirect and/or leave if youth becomes overloaded

Successful applicant will participate in the development of the support/intervention program based on the needs of the youth throughout the contract period.

Qualifications:

Must have verbal and written English
Experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Kind, patient and adaptable
High School Diploma or higher
In process or completed a program relating to special needs
Criminal Records Check
References
American Sign Language an asset
