5 days Speechreading Instructor Trainingg

0

Are you interested to be a speech reading instructor?

If you have taken speechreading classes, have experience with audiology/speech pathology or Deaf education, you might be well qualified to take this 5-day Speechreading Instructor training to teach Let’s Talk. An instructor needs:

• A good understanding of hearing loss.

• To have accepted their own hearing loss and resolved their own emotional issues before undergoing training – “help yourself before helping others”.

• Teaching skills that also include lesson preparation.

• Training: to teach classes in speechreading and coping strategies; to determine the individual needs of the students; to lead discussions addressing the issues facing people with hearing loss.

• Empathy towards adults with hearing loss.

This program was developed by experienced hard of hearing speechreading instructors throughout Canada through the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA).  There are many demands by the growing population of hard of hearing adults and seniors for program to learn more about hearing loss and how to cope with it.

Leslee Scott is CHHA’s Western “Instructor” on Vancouver Island to provide instructional training for this program.  If you are interested in taking this training in the spring of 2018, you may contact her at leslee@idhhc.ca or write to her at 201 – 754 Broughton St Victoria BC V8W 1E1.   An application form may be found at www.chha.ca/sren.  For other training locations across Canada, you may contact the CHHA national office awickware@chha.ca

Opportunity Funds Vlog Transcript

Hi, my name is Amar, I am a volunteer with the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Employment Counselling Department.

I would like to talk about WIDHH’s new Opportunity Funds Program.

There are three different components that make up this program.

First, is Target Wage Subsidy. How this works is WIDHH will make an agreement with a potential employer to supplement your income for the first two months of employment.

WIDHH will also be able to provide some financial assistance for living expenses and pay for clients to participate in some short term training. For example, Food Safe, First Aid, etc.

The Opportunity Funds Program starts January 2nd, 2018 and runs until June 29th, 2018.

During this time, participants will be developing skills to become employment ready. They will be eligible to receive some financial assistance for living costs, transportation, interpreters, training, accessibility needs, ie: hearing aids, FM Systems, Flash alarms, etc.

Those eligible to participate in this program must be Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deaf Blind, be unemployed, working less than 28 hours a week or underemployed, a Canadian Citizen, not have received EI within the last three years, and live in the Lower Mainland.
