Vines Art Festival Promo Script

“Hello, my name is Ladan Sahraei.

I want to let you know about some ASL interpreted events at the upcoming Vines Art Festival 2018. The festival is a free public event that creates platforms for local artists and performers to create with and on the land, steering their creative impulses toward work that focuses on the environment. They stage work in pedestrian, open-air settings so audiences will happen upon public art, finding delight in the unexpected beauty and power of the super-natural Coast Salish Territory.”
Interactive Art | Spoken Word | Theatre | August 8 | 1-4PM | Granville Island

ASL interpreted offerings on August 8th include spoken word by Rabbit Richards and Quin Lawrence. The final presentation will be Tom Catyr Todd’s short play, Venus and Moon. Venus and Moon is a play about two planets the explores our relationship to femininity. The play centres queer characters and experience through absurdism and intimacy.
Dance | Disability Justice Workshop  | 1-3:30PM | Roundhouse Community Centre

All Bodies Dance examines sanctuary in relationship to self, to one another and to the people that inhabit public spaces. Choreographed and performed by Harmanie Taylor and Rianne Svelnis
In Quin Lawrence’s workshop, learn about the history of disabled people around the world, activists and artists working and creating change today, and the role disabled people have in your actions creating change.
Dance | Spoken Word | Theatre August 18 | 1-6PM | Trout Lake Park

Vine’s main event is at Trout Lake Park, at the South end of the lake, on August 18th from 1:00 pm – 7:30 pm with over 30 artists and featuring our Resilient Roots Program. The Resilient Roots Project led by Senaqwila Wyss (S?wx?wú7mesh Ethnobotanist), Heather Lamoureux (Artistic Director of Vines Festival), and Sara Cadeau (Anishnaabe Kwe, ceremonialist, singer, writer, maker of medicines and helper of people), is a commissioning project that partners Indigenous and non-Indigenous artivists to create a new work which will be performed at Trout Lake on August 18. Humans, Rising Sea Levels and the Fraser River Estuary | Ocean Matters July Lecture

Tuesday, 24-Jul-2018 @ 7pm (doors 6.30pm)

BC’s Fraser River Estuary is under immense threat from both climate change and human activities. This wetland is a biodiversity hotspot that is vital habitat for a large number of plants and animals, including millions of migrating Pacific salmon and shorebirds.

Since 1827, human activities have caused the disappearance and degradation of these important fish and wildlife habitats. This continues today, with even more development, pollution, industrial activities and spread of invasive species. However, in the 21st century sea-level rise is likely to pose an even greater danger, unless we do something to protect this incredible ecosystem.

In this talk, Eric Balke will tell us about his work protecting the Fraser River Estuary, and his research into ways we can protect it against both present and future threats.

The Speaker

Eric Balke is the Coordinator of the South Coast Conservation Land Management Program. He manages a portfolio of conservation lands as part of a partnership with the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, Ducks Unlimited Canada, The Nature Trust of British Columbia, and the Canadian Wildlife Service/Environment and Climate Change Canada.
