BC Lions game August 9 O Canada ASL signer and special message for WAVLI

Transcript: Hello everyone, you all remember from last time of my previous announcement of BC Lions of 8 games to have an ASL signer for O Canada. We have found 8 deaf invidiuals and well diversity in our community, For this Thursday, August 9 th, we have a 10 years old deaf girl who is currently attending BCSD elementary, and her name is Teanna Santos-Kay.  If you want to buy tickets for the games, please buy the tickets by using this link, https://bit.ly/2m5CAux and the code will be GVAD. Just follow the process on the website with the link.

We would like to say many special thanks to the WAVLI, after arranging for 8 deaf signers, we needed Interpreters for our ears and voice to make sure we know when the music/ hearing singer start singing, also make sure our ASL matches with their voices of the O Canada.  We got so many responses from WAVLI members willing to help us out. It’s wonderful for our deaf community, For Unity. For our support for recognition of our equal rights and deaf can do. One new thing I have learned, scheduling along with the dates for interpreters etc, has been challenging experience, so for those who work dispatch , arranging for schedule for appointments in community or medical interpreting is a lot of work. They work hard, so they earn some respect as I learned new on arranging and making sure etc!!!  So thank you all!

Paddling for a Cleaner Ocean: What Happened Next? With ASL interpreters provided!

Paddling for a Cleaner Ocean: What Happened Next?

Tuesday, 14-Aug-2018 @ 7pm (doors 6.45pm)

Passage Adventure’s Plastic Free, Two-Thousand Kilometre Kayak Expedition

At the start of May, Lucy Graham and Mahilde Gordon launched their sea kayaks from the shores of Glacier Bay in Alaska, beginning a 2100km, 3-month long journey through the Inside Passage, raising awareness of marine debris along their way! They collected data on marine debris, participated in a beach cleanup and spoke at several public events. They have also raised thousands of dollars for the Tangaroa Blue Foundation and the Living Oceans Society, two organisations that run beach cleanups and work towards stopping the trash at the source.

During this extraordinary journey they saw countless whales, had a rising tide flood their tent, navigated costal rapids, and met incredible people en route. They pushed themselves mentally and physically, and saw things they never imagined!

Come along to find out if, at the end of their trip, they are still friends! Did they starve or was the plastic free food storage a success? How was their journey around Cape Caution? What did they see on their remote beach cleanup with the Living Oceans Society? What are some ideas to combat global marine debris and stop this rubbish at the source?

About Passage Adventures

Lucy Graham and Mathilde Gordon are Passage Adventures. They are two women who have lived single-use plastic-free lives for over 2 years. To find out more Passage Adventures, check their Facebook page, Instagram or at www.passageadventures.org. Make a donation here!

“Movement is fo Every Body” ASL interpreters provided

My name is Leah, and I’m the new Program Manager here at ArtStarts, located on Richards and Robson in downtown Vancouver. We have just installed a new exhibition called “Movement is for Every Body” that highlights work created by B.C. student artists on accessibility in the dance world. The exhibition will launch on August 11th with a party for families and young people; we are providing ASL interpretation for this event and so I wanted to reach out to make sure that your organization was invited. From 11am – 12pm, we’ll be hosting a drop-in art activity for young people ages 12 and under and their families. From 12:30pm – 1pm, staff will share a few words about the exhibit and encourage visitors to explore the gallery and share some food!  This event and all our programming at ArtStarts is by-donation; it would be wonderful if you and your Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing families are available to join us! I will also have an ASL vlog available shortly if that would be useful to spread the word to your community.

If members of your network are interested, could I trouble them to RSVP to leah@artstarts.com indicating number of Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals who will attend by Monday, August 6th? That will help me ensure we have the correct number of interpreters on-site and can meet any other access needs on site. ArtStarts is fully wheelchair accessible, though our lift cannot accommodate an adult in an electric scooter. If this event isn’t a possibility, we will be expanding ASL interpretation to our regular drop-in programming for families on Saturdays in the fall, and I’ll be happy to get that information to you once it’s available.

Take good care, and don’t hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions! All best,

Leah
