Deaf Opera

0
I would like to reach out to Deaf media orgs before reaching out to hearing people about Jesse – An ASL Opera that explores the intersectionality of Deaf theatre, Opera and Music. The project is lead by me, a Deaf artist, to challenge the social norms in art spaces, especially, in Canada where there is a lack of formal training for Deaf artists.

Feel free to have a look at our press release attached in this email.

Synopsis

“You have failed the hearing test”. No apologies required, it is fact. You seek for validation and a sense of belonging but you know that this is the result that will never change. You will always fail. While both hands tucked under the buttocks, you wouldn’t remember the last time you felt warm and safe. It hits you, how crazy and lonely it is inside a black box in the audiology department.

Jesse – An ASL Opera is a  story about one man’s journey of self-discovery through Deaf culture, queerness and finding the rhythm of being human.

Kind regards,

Landon Krentz

To whom may it concern,

My name is Somang Nam. I am a Ph.D. student in Industrial Engineering,
University of Toronto and I work at the Inclusive Media & Design
Centre, Ryerson University.
My research is to develop a subjective quality assessment method for
live Closed Captioning (CC) which can reflect Deaf or Hard of Hearing
(D/HoH) viewer opinions while automating the assessment procedure.
I am writing this email to recruit D/HoH caption viewers for an online
survey and it would be appreciated if I could get some help from you.
The survey will ask a brief demographics about the experiences of live
CC and to rate the quality of captions in several short (~20 sec)
video clips.
It can take a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the survey and
participants will receive a small honorarium upon completion ($10 CAD).
I have attached the image poster that can go with the study
advertisement post (at the end of this email) and a weblink for study
overview page at <http://imdc.ca/~somang>

Please feel free to contact me directly at any time. I look forward to
our conversation.
Additionally, if you wish, it would be greatly appreciated if you pass
this email along to others you may think may have an interest in this.
Again thank you and have a great day!

The survey is online at <https://smndoo.pythonanywhere.com>
Participants can simply send the hashcode provided at the end of the
survey to this email [somang@mie.utoronto.ca] to arrange compensation.
Any potential participants may participate in the survey website using
the below credentials:
username: surveyuser

*if the website is inaccessible using above credentials, then the
survey is likely to be closed.

A Vista presented by Fight With a Stick March 20 – 22

0
An update: we have UNLIMITED FREE tickets for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing folks who would like to attend. They simply need to email me at mia.susan.amir@gmail.com.
Fight With a Stick presents A Vista, the ultimate theatre experience of making the background the main performer. https://www.masseytheatre.com/event/a-vista/
Over three nights in March, dozens of painted backdrops become the main attraction as the company works the antique hemp-rope rigging system to animate the beautifully painted settings. Up to fifteen backdrops are in action at one time, each one playing off the next in a unique visual choreography of canvass, pipe, rope, sound and lights.
During the three-day event, a “crew” of performers and designers animate 45 backdrops working to partner with the collective movement possibilities of the hemp house rigging system and the drops it holds. Each evening will focus on a different formal elements of the painted backdrops:
Weds. Mar. 20th – Full Drops
Thurs. Mar. 21st – Portals
Fri. Mar. 22nd – Legs.
The drops are openly handled and revealed in an ever-changing installation sequence in which no transition or backdrop is given more attention than any other.
Tickets:
Accessibility:
This is a visually-driven performance without spoken text. This show is accessible to Deaf and Hard of Hearing audiences. We are currently confirming ASL Interpretation for interpretation of the sound design and for Front of House.
For additional details about accessibility at the Massey Theatre please check this link: https://www.masseytheatre.com/plan-your-visit/when-you-arrive/
