ASL Interpreters at Book Launch

0

Hello,

I am writing to invite you to a book launch for Against Death: 35 Essays on Living.
The launch is on Sep 25 at 6pm at Hood 29, 4470 Main St.  We will have nine authors sharing their work at this celebration. The venue is wheelchair accessible and we have two ASL interpreters coming. I hope you will share this with anyone who might be interested.

Show on a boat – with interpreters!

0
Hey there,

I’m hoping you might be able to send this link  to the Deaf community. I am interpreting a show on a boat and the company has made efforts to make it accessible and would like to let the Deaf community know about it 🙂

Please let me know if you’re able to send it around or not.  I am also still looking for someone to team this event with me.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers,

Jessica Heuchert

CBC & AMI Documentary Series Seeking Participants

0

Hello,

I am a researcher in documentary TV. I work for a company in Montreal, called Pixcom Productions. I’m reaching out because we are producing the second season of a series for the CBC and AMI about people from across Canada who face discrimination, marginalization and ignorance. The series is called You Can’t Ask That! You can see a segment from season 1 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66lQTdxHEMg

It’s a documentary series that confronts prejudice and breaks down the taboos in our society in an entertaining yet authentic format. Every episode features several individuals who face similar challenges as they sit in front of the camera and candidly answer questions submitted by the public. The format is respectful and answers are honest, and sometimes entertaining, challenging the audience to rethink their assumptions on the episode’s topic.

As each episode features a variety of people, the audience is given a better understanding of the range of experiences and challenges these individuals have faced. The idea is to give candidates the safe and respectful forum to speak honestly about their lived experience.

I am writing because we are looking for participants from the deaf community, adults and children and we are hoping you would be able to share this with your membership. I have attached an image for social media as well. Anyone interested should email me at youcantaskthat@pixcom.com

If you would like to talk about this opportunity, have people you would like to suggest or if you have any questions at all, please feel free to call or email me.

Thanks very much, hope to talk soon.

Note: By the way, we learned Facebook polling does not work well on cell phones. Facebook assures us they are working to fix the problem. We apologize for that.

GVAD AGM Announcement – Saturday, October 5

0

Any questions, concerns, requests, etc, please email us at gvadoffice@gmail.com and/or gvadpresident@gmail.com

TRANSCRIPT:

GVAD – Greater Vancouver Association of the Deaf, an organization running strong since 1926.

The board, elected in March 2019, overcame many unexpected challenges.

Do you see the new office behind me? Yes, we moved to a new location, here in Surrey, temporarily.

We hope you will come to support our vision at the AGM on Saturday, October 5th. Yes, the AGM, Annual General Meeting, can be boring, but this one is very important. We need your support for our vision. More details will be shared at the  AGM. Once the AGM is concluded, we will go upstairs to have our traditional Cornfest Party, but on a smaller scale.

It will be hosted by Canadian Deaf Youth Leadership Camp (CDYLC). They are hosting camp here in Vancouver in 2020. It’s a fundraising party. There will be a fee for the party. GVAD members will pay $10.00, while non-members GVAD will pay $20.00. Prior to entering the AGM, you will be asked to register.

Please note there are some changes to membership fees.

Youth between the ages of 19-30 will pay a year membership of $20.00, those from 31-54 will pay $30 for the same membership, and $15 for 55+.

We need YOUR support. For for? I wish I can share details now, but please come to the AGM to learn more about the details!

We look forward to sharing them with you! By the way, bingo on October 19th, which has been previously announced, has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control. Rest assured, bingo will happen in the near future. We anticipate more than two Bingos a year. It will work out, eventually.

See you on Saturday, October 5th starting in the morning at 10:00 at 530 Columbia Street, New Westminster, adjacent to Army and Navy store, across the street from Columbia Skytrain Station.

See you there on Sat, October 5th! Thumb up!

Sept 19th – Disability and Mental Health

0

We wish to inform you about our next Disabled Community Connection Network (DCCN) session. DCCN is a monthly communication and information group for people of all ages (16+) with any disability. This group is supported by the North Shore Disability Resource Centre.

The next group is September 19th from 4:00PM – 6:00PM. The session will now be held at The North Shore Disability Resource Centre 3158 Mountain Highway. North Shore Disability Resource Centre is an accessible space, please let us know of any other accessibility requirements you might have in advance of the meeting.

The topic for the session will be on

“Dealing with Mental Health and Depression as a Disabled Person”

Christa McDiarmid will be our speaker. MacDiarmid is Organizational Coach and Consultant, working with employees, teams and top teams with regard to interpersonal conflict and communication, insight from feedback, vulnerabilities and stressors, and working with personal potential. She was born with a genetic condition, Charcot Marie Tooth – a neuropathy that affects strength in lower limbs, feet and hands, though MacDiarmid did not find out until she was 43 that it had a name. When MacDiarmid turned 44, she had a mental breakdown due to a few traumas, including the results of a ‘transformative’ operation on her feet and toes. MacDiarmid will speak to the impact of disability on mental health and a general ability to like yourself as you are.

ASL Interpretation and light refreshments provided! Please let us know of any accommodations and dietary needs you require.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The DCCN will now have a registration limit of 15. Email laur.stinson@gmail.com or call 604-904-4088 to register.
