This position is to manage the Canadian Deaf Men and Women Curling Champions prior to and during the Deaflympic Winter Games to be held at Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia, February 11th – 20th, 2011.We’re currently recruiting prospective candidates for the position of Curling Team Manager.

 

The successful applicant shall be prepared to begin duties effectively in preparation for the upcoming 17 Deaflympic Winter Games in Slovakia.

2010 Tickets for Deaf Youth

Click on the attachment for Application Form: 2010 tickets for Deaf youthfndc FNDC is pleased to announce that we have been given some tickets to the 2010 Olympics.   As of this moment, we have some tickets to Women’s Hockey on Sunday, February 14th (4:30 pm).  We have tickets to another event, but don’t know the details yet.   Services for Family & Community Development (SFCD) will be supporting FNDC to make this event a success!

 We have a limited number of tickets. Please submit your application based on the criteria below.  

 You must:

  • Be deaf or hard of hearing (use sign language)
  • Be in grades 7 to 12
  • Share the same values as an Olympic Athlete (teamwork, commitment and trying your best)
  • Fill out this application form
  • Sign this form yourself
  • Have your parents sign the form
  • Have your school counsellor, teacher or principal sign the form
  • Be available to attend a MANDATORY information night: 6:30, Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

 Next:

  • Applications are to be delivered to: Provincial Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (address below).  We can’t be responsible for lost applications in the mail.
  • Put the application in an envelope, and write “Olympic” application on the front.  If you drop off in person, ONLY give it to the person at the front desk.
  • Deadline: application received before or ON Friday January 29, 2010 by NOON
  •  A team will review the applications, and successful candidates will be notified by email or phone on Monday February 1st 2010.  
  • All successful candidates must attend Information Night, Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Provincial Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Burnaby (4334 Victory Street)

 The event will require a very long day of travel within large crowds of people using public transit.  We will have chaperones for the event, but will be UNABLE to provide full supervision.  Therefore, we need deaf youth to be independent and responsible to be able to travel with the group.  (ie: youth need to know what to do in case they are separated from the group).

DCC 2010 Early Bird Deadline Extended

We have extended both the early bird registration deadline AND the call for papers deadline! We are hoping you will come to Vancouver July 13-18th for a wonderful national conference. We have exciting presenters and events planned for everyone who comes. The deadline for early bird registration is now FEBRUARY 15th 2010!

Local Deaf Leader Carrying Olympic Torch

WILL BE RUNNING WITH THE OLYMPICS TORCH

ON

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH, 2010

IN

SQUAMISH, BC

HIS RUN WILL BE STARTING ALONG STAWAMUS RD

FROM:  CAUTION CHILDREN PLAYING SIGN

TO:  VALLEYVIEW PLACE SIGN ON STAWAMUS RD

This is his second time to run with an Olympics torch.  He carried a torch during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics torch relay in Richmond, BC.  He will be representing our Deaf community in BC.  He is involved in many Deaf organizations such as Canadian Deaf Sports Association (CDSA), British Columbia Deaf Sports Federation (BCDSF) and Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WIDHH) for many years.

There will be a community gathering afterwards in Squamish after Dan’s run.   More details to be followed.

WORLDEAF Cinema Festival

at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, USA.

We are accepting submissions from filmmakers (18 and up) for the following categories:

Types of films:

Narrative (film)
Documentary
Experimental
Animation

Lengths:

Mini-15 (15 minutes or less, including opening graphics and closing credits) Short (16-44 minutes, including opening graphics and closing credits) Feature (45 minutes or longer) 

We are also inviting submissions from vloggers. Their submissions must not exceed four minutes and must have had been posted on the Internet. We seek quality vlogs. Submissions of vlogs with abusive content will not be considered for competition.

 Deadline for all submissions is August 1, 2010.

 Awards will be awarded to the following categories:

Best Narrative
Best Short
Best Mini-15
Best Documentary
Best College Student Film,
Best Film about the Deaf Experience by a Hearing Filmmaker
Best Vlog

 All submissions must be captioned or subtitled in English. Audio is optional.
