Foster Home

I need some assistance in finding a full time residential resource/foster home to support a 13-year-old female with a dual sensory impairment of Deaf blindness.

She is also diagnosed with ADHD, mild CP, developmental disability and behavioural issues. This child attends the BC school for Deaf in Burnaby and the plan is for her to continue in that high school. This child has some behaviours, which are under review by a psychiatrist and these may be managed by meds in the next little while. This child needs to have a new home by the end of July and we are willing to prioritize the homestudy for viable applicants. The caregiver we are looking for needs to have the skill of communicating in ASL as this is the language the child uses to communicate all her needs; they also need to have some experience/skills to work with children and youth with special needs.
If you are interested in becoming a home for this child or would like additional information, please contact me at: email maninder.sidhu@gov.bc.ca. or call me at 604-951-5701.

Leona Parr-Hamel-Scholarship

In memory of Leona Parr-Hamel, Vancouver Community College has established a scholarship that, as Leona wished, will be given to a current student in VCC’s ASL and Deaf Studies Program, or a graduate currently enrolled in the Douglas College IEP, who shows interest in and dedication to working with the Deaf-Blind community. The scholarship will be awarded as part of VCC’s Spring Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 26th. A Reception will be held from 3:00-3:30pm in the event space at the Broadway campus with the ceremony to follow from 3:30-5:30pm.

Leona’s family and friends will be in attendance and they, along with the Interpreting and Braille Services department’s staff interpreters invite you to attend the ceremony. By doing so, you will be a part of honoring our much-loved co-worker and friend as her passion for working with Deaf-Blind individuals is recognized, and encouragement to follow in her footsteps given through awarding a scholarship to a promising student.

Interpreters will be provided. If you are Deaf-Blind and require additional interpreting services, please contact Jami Nystrom by May 16th at jnystrom@vcc.ca.
