WIDHH has entered into the Aviva Community Fund online voting contest and we need your support and votes so we can advance to the next round. Take a moment to read about “A Room of Our Own” a seniors program we wish to provide with your help. Click the link below… simply register and start voting to support this amazing service to the Community!
The “A Room of our Own” idea grew out of discussions with Deaf and Hard of Hearing seniors about what would improve the quality of their lives and how they could remain healthy and connected to their Community.
They told us that as Deaf and Hard of Hearing seniors they cannot benefit from programs in their Neighborhood because of communication barriers. The Happy Hands, a Deaf seniors group needs a permanent space to operate from to develop and provide the same activities found in mainstream seniors centres but with access to communication.
They also told us that as fit and active seniors they wanted to support their friends who are frail and possibly homebound but; they didn’t have the resources to organize a volunteer program.
SO, we took those ideas and designed the program “A Room of Their Own” which includes renting a space, providing transportation and a Volunteer Trainer/Coordinator to establish a rooster of Senior Volunteers to serve their Community.
The seniors in our Community have always volunteered, have always made a contribution and we don’t want them to stop! Many of the seniors who will benefit have volunteered countless hours over the years to many organizations; they have been founding and supporting members and Board Members.
SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND GRATITUDE TO THEM BY PROMOTING VOTING TO ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS & FRIENDS.
Go to the contest site http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf11864 and find out how you can use register to VOTE and promote our idea via Facebook, Twitter & Google+ to bring in even more votes. Please help us to make this idea become a reality!
Hello Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind & their family members
Again, this may be the only time WBP will provide this workshop on the Island, so it is a not-to-miss session if you WANT more information and need to ask questions
specifically on the Registered Disability Savings Plan offered via the Federal Government.

OPEN TO: Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind, & their hearing family members
The ASL and Deaf Studies Department and the Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults has partnered with the Greater Vancouver Association of the Deaf to host activities to celebrate the International Week of the Deaf and the International Day of Sign Language.
The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) first launched International Day of the Deaf in 1958; the “day” was later extended to “week.” The International Week of the Deaf (IWD) is observed annually during the last full week of September. The week culminates with International Day of the Deaf on the last Sunday of the week. The 1st World Congress of the WFD took place in September 1951, and the choice of September to celebrate the International Week and Day of the Deaf is a commemoration of this historical event.
Each member country of the WFD can choose a specific theme for its focus. In Canada, the Canadian Association of the Deaf has suggested a spotlight on the rights of Deaf people to access quality education. As Vancouver Community College has been educating Deaf adults for almost 40 years, it is very appropriate we celebrate IWD 2011 from September 19 to 23.
We hope you will join us in the various activities that are planned.
Contact persons: Vincent Chauvet (vchauvet@vcc.ca) for Art Show
and Leanor Vlug (lvlug@vcc.ca) for other events on campus.
