The Map: Follow-Up

0

Hello fellow Deaf community members! Here’s another update video that I produced for all of you, locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally as a follow-up to my first video titled, “The Map: Deaf Baby in BC”, which can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch_nfjgrz7w The second video can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8NhQMz8yWE. It explains about an update of a meeting I had with the BC Early Hearing Intervention Provincial Coordinator back in July. I added some my own personal perspectives as well that I hope will help others understand my reasons of concerns with our existing disillusioned “system” for Deaf children in BC.

Joint Executive meeting is taking place on Wednesday, 19 September and another video will follow. 🙂

Feel free to contact me anytime via e-mail (JLBirley@yahoo.ca) if you have questions and/or feedback.

Kind regards,
Jodi

Vocabulary and Grammar in American Sign Language: A Linguistics Toolkit

This workshop covers a breadth of topics that pertains to vocabulary and grammar in ASL. As
for ASL lexicon, we will compare meanings in signs by comparing sets of closely semantically-
related signs along with a discussion about how these signs are typically construed in ASL.
As for the section about grammar in ASL, we will learn about the roles and functions of eye
gaze and grammatical lexical signs. We will explore about the role of eye gaze in ASL classifier
constructions. We will discuss about grammatical lexical signs and their use in ASL discourse,
as we will find that these forms demonstrate remarkably different grammatical uses than seen
in English. All topics will be provided with hands-on activities with video clips. This workshop
provides a starting point for participants to develop and learn how to use tools to improve their
ASL metalinguistic skills.

WAVLI’s Professional Development Cancellation Policy:
POLICY
Any individual registered for a professional development event offered
by WAVLI may cancel prior to the posted registration deadline without
penalty. If individuals cancel after the registration deadline,
payment of the full registration fee will be required, regardless of
whether or not they attend the professional development event.

RATIONALE
WAVLI offers professional development for its members on a cost
recovery basis and last minute cancellations have a severe impact on
our financial ability to provide ongoing educational opportunities. In
the past, WAVLI has hosted professional development opportunities that
have had more than ten registered individuals not show up on the day
of the actual event, often without any prior notification. This
behaviour on behalf of our members leaves WAVLI scrambling to cover
our financial obligations. Therefore, to maintain integrity while
continuing to offer professional development opportunities, we must
now enact this cancellation policy.

This policy went into effect May 6, 2011 and applies to all
professional development activities provided by WAVLI.

Should you have any questions about the cancellation policy please do
not hesitate to contact us at professionaldevelopment@wavli.com

Thank you,

CAEDHH Conference

You’re invited to attend our annual CAEDHH-BC Conference: October 19th, 2012!

Exploring the Active Power of Reframing
This workshop explores power and privilege and ways that we can “unpack” some of those privileges for the purpose of creating more socially just environments (and interactions).
Ryan Commerson and Alison Aubrecht will examine social construction, ideology and tools for reframing. Reframing has the potential to inspire positive images. They will critically interrogate the four letter word, d-e-a-f, and all of the baggage that comes with it.
Anti-Bullying
Leslee Scott will examine the difference between bullying and  teasing and explain how parents and teachers can help students to overcome these issues.

D-Link VP’s and Portable TTY’s

0

I received several D-Link videophones and portable TTYs from a friend in the United States for distribution here in B.C. Before I decide on distribution, I would like to have your ideas as to what criteria should be used as the basis of distribution. Should it be based on need, income, geographical region, or what? Should it be distributed to deaf adults or deaf people of all age or to corporations or governmental agencies? Priorities? Limited to those with the internet access?

Remember those videophones are ip-address based and do not recognize ten-digit numbers, I believe. I have not — and will not — test videophones and portable TTYs. They are better than nothing.

I am simply passing on to members of the B.C. Deaf community this opportunity to get a device.

Let me know your thoughts by emailing to me at deafwanderer@hotmail.com. At this time, do NOT send me messages to indicate you want a device. I just want ideas now. I will let you know through DeafBC or some other organizations when requests for devices may be made.

After I get your thoughts, I might set up a committee to evaluate your ideas. Anyone in the Deaf community as well as those in governmental or private agencies and corporations is welcome to send ideas to me. No deadline but the sooner, the better. Thanks.
