Seeking a Male Counselor for Deaf Teen Leadership Camp

We are looking for male Deaf leaders who want to work as Senior Counselors for Deaf Teen Leadership (DTL) camp.

The roles and responsibilities include but not limited to are to:

-Assist Team Leader on challenge course when needed

-Work with Team Leader to provide leadership activities throughout the day

-Supervise campers in dorms

-Establish common ground rules with campers

-Provide support to campers when needed

-Attend to staff meetings

-Be a role model for Junior Counselors

-Other duties as assigned

DTL camp is from June 27 – July 2. DTL staff will start working one day prior to camp (June 26) and have a wrap up meeting after the campers leave.

Barriers remain for the Deaf despite better technology

When Vinu Abraham was growing up in India, he had to write letters and wait for a response in order to communicate with others. His friends could just pick up the phone and talk to each other. Born deaf at a time when limited communication technology was available to him, Abraham is now a communications technician at the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WIDHH) in Vancouver and an active member of the Deaf community.

Modern technology has changed the way people communicate with each other, and this is especially true for the Deaf and hard of hearing communities. Smartphones, Skype and Facetime offer tremendous opportunities for people who mainly communicate visually through sign language. Though technology helps, communication barriers still exist between Deaf and hearing people.

A friendly reminder, WBP is providing a workshop on Anger on Thursday April 11th.

Time: 6:00 – 9:00pm.

There are a few seats left.  
Workshop topics will cover:
– Why am I always Angry?
– How do I reduce and express Anger in a healthy way?
– What are the different Angry styles & thinking?
– Where can I get help?
 
Presented in ASL by: Kevin Ettinger, Mental Health Counsellor.

Announcement: World Report on Disability in International Sign

The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) is pleased to announce that the World Report on Disability made by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank is now available in International Sign. The World Report on Disability was published by the WHO and the World Bank in 2011. The Report includes information on lives of persons with disabilities with recommendations for different stakeholders.

WFD President Colin Allen believes that it is an international breakthrough to have the World Report on Disability available in International Sign. Allen congratulates the WHO for their commitment ensuring the report was translated and available in International Sign – an initiative that benefits WFD Ordinary Members in 133 countries.

The World Report on Disability is currently available in several languages and in various formats to ensure accessibility. The International Sign version along with versions in different languages and formats is available at

Dear Deaf community,

Please support the fundraising campaign for my documentary “Beyond Silence”.

The documentary “Beyond Silence” will document the incredible challenges deaf people face in India and hopefully create change for them. India has the largest deaf population in the world, but sign language is still not an officially recognized language. India has no captions on television, no deaf colleges, and no TTY.

Cumberland Motorcycle Roundup

The 5th annual Cumberland Motorcycle Roundup (www.cumberlandmotorcycleroundup.com) is gearing up towards a fabulous event. We have our motors running, throttles full on, and full speed ahead for our Show and Shine and Poker Run held on August 10 and 11th, 2013 in Cumberland located just 1 hour north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.

This year, Saturday’s offerings include a street full of vendors, lingerie shows, bike games, live music, displays, a burn out pit, beer gardens, and live auction, tons of amazing prices and raffles, and ending the day with a great evening dance at the local community hall. Our Brick House Betties, “Roller Derby Hotties”, will be rolling around doing all sorts of crazy antics

Our rally has a ten buck ($10) policy.

$10 for camping, $10 for the dance, $10 for show and shine registration, and $10 for the Tom Carpenter Poker Run on Sunday.

The event is free for all spectators.

And speaking of the Poker Run, ours is very unique, with over 110 kms of fabulous Vancouver Island scenery. Our highlight, provided by Mount Washington Alpine Resort, is a ride up the ski hill chair lift to collect the 4th poker card.

The scenery is breathtaking, so don’t forget your camera and a light jacket. The ride is free to all those holding a poker hand, but for a mere $15 a passenger is welcome to go along for the ride. All that riding got you hungry? Mount Washington provides a smorgasbord lunch at a very reasonable cost.

Last year we welcomed several deaf motorcycle enthusiasts and we are happy this year to provided sign language services and TTY equipment availability throughout the weekend.  Please extend our invitation to any riders in the community who may be interested in attending.
