I am really surprised by the fact that almost 50% of the comments posted in this discussion have been made by people who are not Deaf and do not use sign language.

Deaf people need to get involved in this discussion! It is not difficult to participate. Please post your comments immediately, because the discussion closes on Monday!

VANCOUVER — Citizenship and Immigration Canada has reversed its decision to deny permanent residency to the 14-year-old daughter of a Vancouver caregiver from the Philippines because she is deaf.
This means Jazmine Talosig will likely be able to join her mother, Karen Talosig, in Vancouver, after seven years of separation.

Talosig received a letter from C.I.C.’s Manila office early Wednesday stating that her visas for permanent residency were ready to be issued, subject to a final admissibility review by an immigration officer.

“I’m over the moon,” Karen Talosig said of the decision. “I was so happy and relieved.”

There will be a Sign Language Interpreter for the noon opening of their Canada Day Celebration on July 1st at 12:00AM at Prospera Place in Kelowna. Cultural show, food from all over the world and free Canada Day cake served by the Mayor, and other local politicians.

 
Christmas Craft Fair is back!  

Money raise will go to DeafBlind club for Intervenor (interpreters for the deaf blind). The date is Saturday November 7th from 10:30am to 4pm. To rent a table, please fill out the form, sign the agreement and send payment to Tuen or Deonilde. Only 16 tables are available. Rental cost is $30 before September 4th or $35 from September 5th to October 17th. Anyone is welcome to show their craft or business. Deaf friendly!

Part Time Support Worker for a Deaf individualNeeded 3-4 afternoons per week in Duncan BC

We are looking for a kind, friendly, responsible, reliable, and calm home and community support worker for a Deaf individual who lives a life of dignity in Duncan.

Hours: Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon 1 pm to 5 pm plus 2 Sunday afternoons per month.

Start date: July or August. The successful applicant will participate in orientation and (if needed) ASL and Deaf Culture education, and (if needed) mental health support worker training this summer.

Qualifications:

-Training and/or experience in home and community support work

-Sign and understand ASL at an intermediate level or better (or be willing to upgrade your skills by participating in 40 hours of ASL classes this summer)

-Familiar with and comfortable with Deaf culture (or be willing to participate in a one-day Deaf Culture educational session) 

-Clear criminal record check

-Valid drivers license with a safe driving history.

-Prefer non-smoker

-Prefer support workers who have their own computer and/or mobile phone and are comfortable with email, text messaging, and video conferencing.

Responsibilities include:
Provide friendly, tactful and relaxed practical support and background coaching focused on:

1) accomplishing activities of daily living and staying organized at home and in the community
2) providing support to prevent and manage anxiety and back pain

3) supporting the individual to go to appointments, banking, grocery shopping, art lessons etc.

4) occasionally supporting participation in community events and in gentle leisure, recreation and social adventures 

Rate of pay:

$12 to $17 per hour depending on your education and experience.
