A Fighting Chance “In Concert” Production
At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together — that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician — united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. The TONY-winning score is just as diverse as the melting pot of America itself, drawing upon many musical styles from the ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, from bold brass band marches to delicate waltzes, from up-tempo banjo tunes to period parlor songs and expansive anthems. A truly unique and powerful portrait of America.

Robert Carlyle HALL Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce Carlyle’s passing on Sunday, January 29, 2017. With his wife and family by his side he was relieved of his suffering at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital. Lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years Betty and his children Michelle (Dave McKenzie) and grandson Nicholas and Darren (Tanya) and grandchildren Robert and Jolene. He will also be lovingly remembered by his brother Lorne (Ethel), his in-laws, Joyce, Elmer (Joan), Gladys, Ilene (Fred), Joan (Gary), Allan (Brenda) and numerous nieces and nephews. Carlyle was predeceased by his parents Bert and Ruth Hall and brothers-in-law Tom and Paul. Dad was a kind and gentle husband, father and grandfather who always greeted everyone with a smile on his face. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He served on the Board of Directors for both the Saskatoon Association of the Deaf and the Canadian Association of the Deaf. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. He enjoyed both playing and watching curling and was an avid fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Calgary Flames. The family would like to thank St. Paul’s Palliative Care for their care and compassion in Dad’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Carlyle may be made to the Saskatchewan Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (#3-511 1st Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1X5) or St Paul’s Palliative Care (1702 20th St West, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0W2). Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.hillcrestmemorial.ca At Carlyle’s request there will be no funeral service. Momondays – Landon Krentz

0

They say that learning an unofficial language is not useful because not everyone gets to travel, however, anyone can go Deaf later in life.

This was not the case for Landon Krentz. He was born profoundly Deaf with a hearing family who did not know any sign language. He had to adjust to the hearing world from the very beginning, and was denied any access to the Deaf community during his childhood for many political reasons that he was not aware of at the time.

On February 20th come experience his story about seeking acceptance and discovering ways to be a part of the opposing world, the Deaf world.

Ragtime tells the story of three families at the start of the 19th century.A white family are happy in the neighbourhood of New Rochelle, NY, until their lives are upended by Sarah, an African American woman unsure of what to do about the arrival of her child. Sarah is pursued by Coalhouse Walker Jr, a jazz musician and father of Sarah’s son. Meanwhile Tateh and his daughter arrive in America from Latvia ready to live the American Dream, despite having an awful time trying to find it. The three families stories mix with real characters of the era like Harry Houdini, Henry Ford and Evelyn Nesbitt. A touching, funny, heartbreaking Broadway musical that won Tony Awards and critical acclaim in its initial run.
