The Greater Vancouver Association of the Deaf (GVAD) is offering one (1) employment position at its office this summer beginning in June 2017 for a student, funded by Canada Summer Jobs 2017 Program. The length of this position is for 10 weeks, with a total of 400 hours.
If you are a student and are interested in working for GVAD this coming summer, please note the following: Students attending community colleges or universities must:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
- have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and plan toreturn to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protectionhas been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territoriallegislation and regulationsKeep in mind that the position is subject to funding. Application process:

Program-Event Coordinator
Qualifications
The Program-Event Coordinator must be organized and have strong English skills. Knowledge of American Sign Language is preferred. The applicant must also be able to multi-task, think
outside the box, and troubleshoot problems. The Program-Event Coordinator must have the ability
to work with all types of people.
The Coordinator assists the GVAD President and designated supervisor in planning events and workshops that meet the demands of the Deaf community and the public at large.
- The Program-Event Coordinator (PC) can interact with people from different backgrounds
- PC has a cheerful nature, is easy to talk to and has a pleasant personality
- PC needs excellent interpersonal skills to be able to work with different people inGVAD.
- PC should be able to work under pressure because this can be a challenging role andthe PC must know how to deal with issues appropriately.
- Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other internet-based apps
- Knowledge of Deaf Culture an asset
- Knowledge of American Sign Language beyond basic level.
- Can meet deadlines
- Work as a team player
- Valid BC Driver’s License an asset
- Can work with little supervision
- Equivalencies of qualifications will be considered.RequirementsThere are no set educational requirements, but experience in working with an organization is preferred. The Program Coordinator is responsible for planning events and programs of different types which could include fund-raising events, recreational events and community workshops. The PC assists the President and/or the appropriate GVAD committees in management, fund-raising and project research.
- ResponsibilitiesThe duties of the Program Coordinator include:
- Planning and supervising tasks such as activities and workshops
- Searching for locations and booking meetings, events and workshops
- Writing letters for donations or support for programs or activities
- Organizing and ensuring that the programs are operated efficiently
- Doing fund-raising tasks and writing applications for grants from foundations
- Researching potential projects and creating long term projects with the President
- Writing publications, preparing materials,and doing public relations tasks for GVAD under supervision of the GVAD Media Committee.
- Working with the Membership Director to set up a membership drive
- Work with the President to recruit volunteers and workers required for programs
- Assigning duties to the volunteers/staff according to their expertise, supervising and guiding volunteers in each event or program.
- Revising and updating any GVAD material such as brochures and the program files
- Assisting in scanning and transferring printed historical materials to digital format. Work with the Archives Committee or volunteers to preserve GVAD and Deaf Community history.
- Planning and coordinating the 39th Annual CornFest and activities celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation and ensuring the inclusion of Deaf immigrants and new citizens.
- Perform other related duties as requiredReports to: GVAD President or delegateSupervises: other paid workers and volunteers as directed by the President.
Salary Details
Hours per week – 40 hours
