Minister Qualtrough introduces National AccessAbility Week to promote accessibility every day, everywhere in Canada

Hello,

As Canada’s Minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities, I believe that our country’s diversity is our strength—and when we include people with disabilities, we create a stronger Canada for everyone.

It is my pleasure to announce that launching this spring, for the first time in many years, an annual national week devoted to inclusion and accessibility.

From May 28 to June 3, 2017National AccessAbility Week will celebrate, highlight and promote inclusion and accessibility in our communities and workplaces across the country.

We’ve made great strides in promoting inclusion for Canadians with disabilities, but there is still much work to do.

To create a truly inclusive society, we need to change the way we think, talk and act about barriers to participation and accessibility—and we need to do it right from the start, not as an afterthought. An inclusive Canada is one where all Canadians can participate and have an equal opportunity to succeed.

National AccessAbility Week will aim to bring this perspective to the forefront for Canadians, and highlight some of the important initiatives this government and its partners are undertaking to bring about this change.

Please join us in celebrating National AccessAbility Week. I invite you to host events in your own local communities, and participate on social media.

More information will be available in the coming weeks on Canada.ca/Accessible-Canada, and I encourage you to follow @AccessibleGCon Twitter, Accessible Canada on Facebook and follow the hashtag #AccessibleCanada and #AccessAbility for the latest information.

Together, let’s continue working towards an Accessible Canada.

The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities

ASL Interpreted performance: Children of God

Children of God is a new musical written and directed by Corey Payette.

On May 21, at 2pm Urban Ink and The Cultch will be presenting an ASL Interpreted Performance.

To book your tickets for the ASL Interpreted Performance on May 21, please email boxoffice@thecultch.com.

In this powerful musical, the children of an Oji-Cree family are sent to a residential school in Northern Ontario. This is a story of redemption: for a mother who was never let past the school’s gate, and her kids, who never knew she came. Children of God offers a thrilling blend of ancient traditions and contemporary realities, celebrating resilience and the power of the Indigenous cultural spirit.

More information can be found online: https://thecultch.com/events/children-of-god/

Landon Krentz’s ASL video trailer:

Transcript: A musical performance called “Children of God” hosted by Urban Ink Productions. The performance is influenced by indigenous spirituality. This is a story about a family whose children were taken away and sent to a residential school. Their mother tries to retrieve her children but were not able to get through the school’s gate. It is an emotional journey about the challenges she’s having. Meanwhile, her children had no idea where their mother is. It’s important to understand that the story includes sexual contexts and haze. The show includes emotional support volunteers in case if you feel overwhelmed or traumatized, the support will be available for you.

Date: Sunday, May 21, – 2:00PM
Location: The Cultch, York Theatre

You can order your tickets online or by email, boxoffice@thecultch.com

They will have reserved seats with ASL visibility set up for you.

FACEBOOK EVENT:

https://www.facebook.com/events/317497525335021/EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Survivors of violence and trauma are left with wounds, hurt, and pain. We carry the scars with us wherever we go. How can we work toward healing and caring for our selves?

Facilitated by lee & Pragya, “Trauma & The Art of Healing” is a 4-week workshop for self-identified, Black, Indigenous, Mixed-Ancestry, and People of Colour communities who have experienced trauma. Topics covered will include a brief overview of the biology of trauma, the science of art therapy, and an in-depth exploration of art as a mode of healing. Participants will engage with art-making and art practices toward creating a mixed-media “map” of our healing journeys.

NOTE: The workshop series is taking place over 4 Mondays in a row. We highly encourage all participants to attend all 4 sessions, as this will allow for deeper engagement with the work, as well as will allow for more time to develop the final art piece. However, we recognize that some folks won’t be able to attend all of the sessions. That’s okay! You’re still welcome to attend as many of the sessions are you’re able to – we would love to have you there. 🙂

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS:

Pragya (MSW, RSW) is a fat, brown, queer, femme with a South Asian body and Prairie heart. She is experienced in working alongside survivors of trauma and those struggling with mental health via public education, crisis intervention, and counselling. Her work is informed by feminist, anti-oppressive principles which guide her narrative and somatic-based approach. Above all, she offers warmth, compassion, witnessing, and gentle invitations to peace and self-love.

lee (uses they/them/theirs pronouns) is a mixed race, queer, trans, interdisciplinary artist and facilitator. they have been grappling with, healing from, making art about, and organizing around sexualized violence and trauma since their teens. they are currently building love projects like ShapeShift Arts (www.shapeshiftarts.com), Kalik (www.kalik.org), and faciliting arts-based workshops towards social/political/healing change.

ACCESSIBILITY INFO:

ASL interpretation has been booked for this series of workshops. Please register by May 18th at noon to confirm your attendance. If no confirmations are received by the deadline, ASL interpretation will be cancelled.

The event space is wheelchair/scooter accessible with access to an accessible washroom nearby.

A gender-neutral washroom is available just down the hall and around the corner from the event space.

In order to enable people to attend without experiencing hardship, bus tickets and money for dependent care (this can include childcare, eldercare, etc.) are available upon request. Please email admin@sfpirg.ca with inquiries.

While we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. Exposure to laundry products, colognes, hairspray, and many other scented products can trigger serious health reactions in individuals with asthma, allergies, migraines, and/or chemical sensitivities. We ask that you not wear/ apply/ or bring any scented products into this space. If you do so, we may need to ask you to leave so others can safely stay in the space. If you find yourself being impacted by someone’s use of scented products during the conference, speak with any one of the organizers. We know that this can be a big step for many people. As Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha says in Fragrance Free Femme of Colour Realness, “Cutting out scents may seem like a pain in the ass, but it means that awesome, ass-kicking community members you love can attend events you’re at and make out with you without having seizures, throwing up or otherwise getting really sick.” Please, bring your amazing self, and keep the scents at home!
(More info here: http://thinkbeforeyoustink.com/howtogofragrancefree.html,http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15http://eastbaymeditation.org/accessibility/scentfree.html)

The event is nut-free and peanut-free. Absolutely no nuts or peanuts will be permitted within the event space in order to create an allergen-free environment for all participants. This includes (but is not limited to) products like hazelnuts, cashews, almonds, coconuts, walnuts, coconut oil, coconut milk, and peanut butter.

If you have any other allergies or sensitivities that we need to know about so that you can participate fully and safely, please let us know atadmin@sfpirg.ca.

Some folks are sensitive and/or get sick from electromagnetic frequency radiation (EMF). This can include radiation from cell phones, Wi-Fi, fluorescent lights, and more. SFU Burnaby has Wi-Fi set up throughout its campus, including in the event space. In order to reduce EMF exposure, we will strive to minimize fluorescent light usage and utilize natural lighting whenever possible.

If there is any other way we can make this event more accessible for you, please let us know at info@sfpirg.ca!

(Vancouver, BC) ~ Need a laugh? Award-winning theatre company Realwheels presents Comedy on Wheels: Celebrating Canada’s Birthday with Belly Laughs! Building from the ground-breaking success of last season’s SexyVoices, this creative and lively disability-inspired comedy variety show combines original stand-up performances, comical scenes, live music, projections, and fun surprises as Realwheels’ community cast tackles some of our sacred cows.
Comedy on Wheels takes place May 18-20, for three performances only, at Performance Works on Granville Island (1218 Cartwright Street). In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, Comedy on Wheels will showcase members of the disability community in performances that capitalize on one of our greatest assets – humour!
Making a special appearance in Comedy on Wheels is UK-based, Canadian-born comic Tanyalee Davis. At 3’6″, Tanyalee is the Ferrari of comedy – low to the ground and kind of racy! Tanyalee has performed her one-person show “Actual Size” in Melbourne and Sydney (2016), was featured on BBC’s “Live at the Apollo” (2015), performed her second solo show, “Big Trouble In Little ‘Gina”, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland (2013), and did a six-month run of her show, “Little Comedian, BIG Laughs” in Las Vegas (2011). Tanyalee is a member of the Abnormally Funny People ensemble, performing throughout the United Kingdom, as well as a writer and star of the Channel 4 series, “I’m Spazticus”.
“A shared laugh strengthens our bonds and dissolves barriers,” says producer and Realwheels’ Managing Artistic Director, Rena Cohen. “Comedy on Wheels will entertain and surprise you with its novel perspective. Prepare to laugh away some of your preconceptions!”
Comedy on Wheels features a large community cast and is Realwheels’ newest project under the Wheel Voices programming banner. Previous Wheel Voices projects include: SexyVoices – A Burlesque Theatre Cabaret (2016), Super Voices (2015), Wheel Voices to the Max! (2013), Wheel Voices Live! (2012).
