a series of nonstop magical moments” – St. Albert Gazette

Realwheels, the company that brought you the hit action-adventure-comedy SKYDIVE is proud to present a new play SPINE: a fast paced, sensually evocative and playful exploration of identity in the face of a sudden transformation in one’s life. The play is performed in blended reality created through innovative use of new technology, somewhere between the virtual and the real.

“SPINE is a character-driven story about someone trying to use technology to reinvent his body and identity,” says Kevin Kerr, Governor General’s Award-winning playwright. “We examine that scenario, along with the growing relationship to our identities through virtual reality. People are getting increasingly comfortable in creating identities online that may not correspond to their actual personal or physical selves. So we’re asking, what does it mean to be real, to be human?”

Following in the tradition of SKYDIVE, SPINE pushes the boundaries of technology, making imaginative use of video screens, three-dimensional projections and actor-influenced soundscapes. “My interest in the technology is to meet the demand of a more contemporary audience”, says James Sanders, artistic director of Realwheels who also plays the central character in SPINE.

Please note that SFU Woodwards will make every effort to accommodate all requests for accessible seating. Please advise the theatre when ordering tickets if you require accessible seating, as well as seating for an attendant.
