The BC-VRS Committee has completed two video messages. The first one is about CRTC and the time-lines for the process with the VRS issue, including a process called “Notice of Consultation.”

2012 Pan American Games for the Deaf

Newsletter – Day 4
First Day of Competition:
Women’s Volleyball, Team Canada had their first game in the morning against
Argentina who is consider to be the favorite to win a gold medal during Pan
Am Games. During the first set, Canada had their jitters and was in trouble
but losing the 1st set 25 to 15, However, they woke up and worked hard which
is much improvement from 1st set though they lost the 2nd set 25 to 23. The
final set was a tight match and hard fought but, lost the 3rd set 25 to 20.
Kim Keba stated that it is first time to have a team together to play match
game and try to make the chemistry work however, they learned a lot during
the match game and hope to improve their game strategy for next 2 games.
They will be playing against Mexico on Sunday June 17th at 8H30 (Brazil
Time).

Intervenor for Student with Deafblindness

Immediate Job Posting –June 13th, 2012

Role: To work as an Intervenor in a high school educational setting with a young woman who has Usher Syndrome Type 1. The school is in a remote First Nations Village on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, close to Tofino, British Columbia. The Intervenor is part of a multidisciplinary team that provides support to the student with Deafblindness.
Qualifications:•Successful completion of a recognized Intervenor Program from George Brown College, Toronto, Douglas College, Vancouver or Medicine Hat College, Medicine Hat. Preferred 2 years experience working as an Intervenor.
•Fluent in American Sign Language including the ability to adjust the sign language to meet student’s visual, educational and communication needs. Competent in the ability to use co-signing, tactile signing and knowledge of the 2 handed manual.
•Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and assistive technology for students who are visually impaired or blind.
•Certificate or demonstrated proficiency in Braille or willing to take the training.
•Knowledge of Orientation and Mobility techniques for the visually impaired.
•Completion of a Special Education Assistant Program at an accredited post secondary institution would be an asset.
Additional Skills: Competent in implementing educational support programs designed by team professionals – speech language pathologist, teacher of the visually impaired, teacher of the deafblind.
•Ability to work effectively as a team member in cooperation with other school personnel, parents, therapists and students.
•Ability and willingness to enhance skills and knowledge in order to meet the goals of the student’s individual educational program.
•Ability to work effectively and independently with the degree of initiative appropriate to the position
•Proven success in establishing and maintaining working relationships
•Ability to establish trust and rapport with students
•Good organizational skills
•An excellent command of the English language and ability to interpret same.
•Appreciation of the confidential nature of all information relating to pupils, parents and teachers.
•Willingness to learn about First Nations Culture. to live in an amazing community, and to attend workshops on Usher Syndrome taught by POPDB Fall 2012
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will use a total communication approach to facilitate communication between student with deafblindness, other students and staff by providing deafblind intervention supports in and out of the classroom. They will assist the student by providing information to help facilitate their successful participation in all aspect of life.
Terms of Employment:Ten months per year on teaching days. Must be available to start work August 20th, 2012.

4 BC Deaf athletes at Pan American Games for the Deaf

Congratulation to 4 BC Deaf athletes that have left with Team Canada to Pan American Games for the Deaf

Team Canada is at Sao Paulo, Brazil to compete in the Pan American Games for the Deaf (June 12 to 24).

The Canadian Deaf Sports Association (CDSA) has a Men’s Basketball Team, Women’s Volleyball and a Swimming Team.

The 4 Deaf athletes from B.C. are:

Joshua Baerg (Ladner, BC) –Swimming

Mari Klassen (Surrey, BC) – Volleyball

Bree Sproule (Oyama, BC) – Volleyball

Jill Schellekens (Langley, BC) – Volleyball
