To Whom It May Concern at the CRTC:

This is to support the creation and implementation of a permanent video relay
service (VRS) program in Canada for the benefit of ALL Canadians.
VRS is NOT for the deaf people or the hearing people who do not speak only. It is for
ALL. Hearing people will have a much more accessible opportunity to reach deaf
people as well as their hearing counterparts who do not speak., and vice versa. It benefits ALL

Your Paragraph 1 suggests that VRS is for those who are “impaired”. With due
respect to the CRTC, there is a need for a paradigm shiftwithin the CRTC regarding
the entire field of telecommunications. Telecommunications are for all Canadians
and must include anyone, technology permitting. Therefore, as an integral part of
the telecommunications field, VRS needs to be for ALL. There are no separate classes
of Canadians; we all are one people in this country.Again, with due respect to the
CRTC, please absorb, assimilate, and cherish this view presented in this paragraph.

Depiction in American Sign Language

The workshop is about the ways ASL signers use their bodies and space for a particular purpose: depiction. Depiction is a relatively new term that describes different ways to demonstrate actions through role shifting or the use of classifier predicates. It also describes other ways of using the body and space to talk imaginatively about concepts as if they were actually existing within the immediate discourse setting. Knowing what these types of depiction are and being able to identify them would benefit ASL interpreters and others working in related fields. This workshop introduces the basic structure of several general types of depiction and provides opportunities for hands-on identification of depiction using video data.

Presenter Paul Dudis, Ph.D. is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Linguistics at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. His main research interest is the structure and use of signed languages from a cognitive linguistic approach.

This workshop will be presented in ASL and interpretation will not be provided.

Lunch will not be provided but there will be light refreshments to enjoy.

Cancellation Policy:

If individuals cancel after the registration deadline, payment of the full registration fee will be required, regardless of whether or not they attend the professional development event.

Golf Clinics for Beginners or Advance Players

West Coast Deaf Golf Club is hosting golf clinics for Beginners and Advance levels. PGA of Canada Head Professional, instructor Shiella Cowan will be teaching. This is for BCDSF members only who are deaf or hard of hearing and interpreter will be provided.

Where: Eaglequest Golf
1001 United Blvd, Coquitlam

Cost: $60.00 for 6 lessons. Payable to WCDGC

Time: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm for Beginners only (maximum 8 golfers)
7:30 pm to 8:30 pm for Advance only (maximum 8 golfers)

Shared Living Provider

Milieu Family Services is screening persons or families
interested in providing shared living supports.
Currently we are screening for a young man who is looking to
move in to the Burnaby area.
The Youngman is proficient using
ASL and requires his Shared Living Provider to be as well.
Shared living is defined as the planned placement of an individual
with a developmental disability in a families’ home other than the
natural families’ home. The Shared living provider would support
and be responsible for/to the individual in their home 24 hours a
day, and welcome the individual as part of their family.

Call for Nominations on Vice-President and Treasurer Positions

The Canadian Association of the Deaf is seeking nominations for its Board of Directors. There
will be an election to fill the positions of Vice-President and Treasurer at our Annual General
Meeting on July 11-13, 2013 in Winnipeg.

Vice-President

The elected officer shall serve as Vice-President for a term of two (2) years. At the conclusion
of this term, the Vice-President shall automatically become President and serve another term
of two (2) years in that capacity. At the conclusion of the President’s term, the incumbent shall
automatically become Past President and serve another term of two (2) years in the capacity.

Treasurer

The elected officer will serve for the rest of term till July 2014. She or he shall make
arrangements to keep financial records and to present audited annual statements to the
annual meeting. She or he shall have experience or knowledge to maintain and enforce the
organization’s financial policies. She or he shall have knowledge or training with regards to
government grants and social enterprises.

We are searching for candidates who support the objectives and activities of the organization.
One of the candidates shall be from the Western Canada.

Hello all,

BCVRS understands that the process for CRTC can seem overwhelming or cryptic with technical language. We understand.
We have, as well as the Ontario Video Relay Service Committee (OVRSC), e-mailed with the CRTC directly, asking for further clarifications, especially on the submission process for video messages to the CRTC.
As a result of these communications, we came up with this PDF document, click here, and posted on our webpage bcvrs.ca, please check it out: http://bcvrs.ca/2013/05/step-by-step-instructions/
The GOOD NEWS is you CAN post comments in your language – ASL, just follow the step by step instructions!
If you were a participant in the Telus-Sorenson VRS trials, please don’t just post comments that simply say, “I want VRS,”  Please share your PERSONAL STORY, your personal EXPERIENCE with Video Relay Services (VRS), for example:
– give real life examples of how VRS benefits you personally. how?
– have you used VRS before?
 – Where were you?
– Who were you calling?  was it your doctor? was it Service Canada? did you order pizza? order a taxi?
– What was the experience like, what was the difference between VRS and TTY Relay or IP Relay?
– Did you find it easier? faster? Why?
– How did VRS make it easier for you?? Why was it better?
The CRTC is interested in hearing real life impact stories.
