A popular TV reality program is The Amazing Race.
The 2014 edition will start on February 23rd.
One of the returning teams is the Maggie O.Donnell- Luke Adams team which excited the nation in the past. While mother Maggie is hearing, son Luke is Deaf.
Texting 911 soon available for those who need it – Vancouver Sun
Texting 911 is one step closer to reality with Friday’s announcement that Canada’s wireless carriers have upgraded their networks, making it possible to implement a text with 911 service for people who are deaf or speech impaired.
According to E-Comm, the regional emergency communications centre for southwest British Columbia, people who are part of the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or speech impaired (DHHSI) community, could have access to the service within the next three months.
The new service will still require callers to initiate a voice call, dialing 911 from their cellphones, but if they have registered their phones for the service through their wireless carrier, the emergency operator will be able to respond via text. The call would then be carried out through an exchange of texts instead of voice.

Your challenge
Under the supervision of the Group Leader, Electrochemical Materials, the Technical Officer, Electrochemical Materials Synthesis and Characterization provides technical support for the research and development of electrochemical technologies. This position will be responsible for performing physical and chemical modifications of materials for electrochemical systems. The position will also conduct laboratory experiments; characterization of materials and components relevant to electrochemical technologies; operate a wide variety of machine tools; use physical and chemical methods; analytical and/or electronic equipment for materials characterization; maintain & service lab equipment; provide assistance to the construction of test specimens, instrumentation and testing; and archive and maintain data.

The MobileASL Project is seeking fluent American Sign Language signers to participate in a 1 hour laboratory study at the University of Washington, Seattle campus occurring from Tuesday, January 7, 2013 to Friday, January 31, 2014 (9am-5pm). Participation is one-time only.
Participants will receive a $25 Amazon.com gift card upon completion of the entire laboratory study. Parking on the UW Seattle campus will be reimbursed.
Laboratory Study Details:
Participation is one-time only and will take 45-90 minutes to complete. Participants will be paired with another fluent ASL signer and hold multiple, 5 minute ASL conversations on a mobile phone provided by the researchers. Your participation will help researchers learn how to improve mobile sign language video software. A sign language interpreter will be available during the laboratory study.
We are looking for participants who are:
-Deaf and/or hard-of-hearing people for whom ASL is their primary language
-Hearing people who sign ASL fluently (over 5 year of signing experience)
-18 years old or older
Participation in this laboratory study is completely voluntary and at any time you are free to withdraw yourself without penalty.
