The Ride to Conquer Cancer
Dear Friends/Relatives May 2014
What exciting news I have to tell you! I can’t believe it was 10 years ago in February that I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Being the 10th anniversary I thought it would be a fun challenge to join The Ride to Conquer Cancer on June 14 & 15 from Vancouver BC to Seattle, Washington, which is about a 200km ride.
Ten years ago, I registered for the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. I walked 60 km in two days. Amazingly family, relatives, friends and even strangers donated over $2,000 in 3 months.
On the first day of that weekend I joined two women for the 35km walk, at lunch time I wasn’t feeling well and I told them to go on without me. Just after 5:30pm, I finished with only 9 walkers behind me. I saw 2 ASL interpreters applauding for me with their hands waving high. I was so pleased and overwhelmed. I had dinner, went home for a soak in the hot tub, then back to the tent to sleep at night. I had a lot of trouble sleeping. After some medication and some sound sleep for a few hours, I woke Sunday feeling terrific and had a lot of energy. I joined the same women again for 25km, but one of them was having trouble walking. The friend and I helped her. Many people cheered for us and we finished in the middle of the pack. What an AWESOME experience I had and it was special to honor lost loved ones and those of us who are survivors.
Three months ago, I began training for this new challenge and I have just bought a new hybrid bike and a helmet. I have been riding about 200-300 kms a week and working out to prepare for this exciting event.
Now and before the event, I can put names of survivors and deceased loved ones on my bike uniform to honor and remember them. Besides myself, I have cousins, aunts, a grandfather, my step-sisters father, and many friends who have fought this disease.
As a participant in The Ride to Conquer Cancer, I’ve committed to riding for two days! I am riding with my cousin’s team and with thousands of other people. As you can imagine, cycling that far is not going to be a simple feat for me. I am excited that I can finally do something in this big fight against cancer.
I know you understand why this is so important to me and know why I’m asking for your financial support. My goal is to raise $2,500 which is a requirement to participate and I really hope you’ll help me and donate what you can. I have contributed $100 dollars through the website.
It’s a simple process to donate to me online, at conquercancer.ca. You’ll also find a printable donation form on my webpage, if you’d prefer that. Many thanks for your participation in The Ride to Conquer Cancer.
God bless,
Donna Russell

Fair in the Square
Hello,
Please let me know which email address to use for sending
updates of my art events. Thank you!
You are invited to come to the
Fair in the Square!
Sunday, June 1, 11 to 2 pm.
at
Victory Square, bordered by Hamilton,
Pender, Cambie and Hastings Streets, in Vanouver, BC
For the past seven years, Central City Foundation and Vancouver Community College have partnered together to host Fair in the Square, a free community concert, celebration and BBQ located in Victory Square Park at Cambie and West Pender across from the downtown campus of Vancouver Community College. While VCC faculty, students and staff volunteer to cook and distribute free BBQ chicken burgers fresh off the grill along with chips, juice and all the cupcakes you can eat! Central City Foundation plans and co-ordinates a fabulous concert featuring a wide breadth of music performed from the Event Stage. In addition, about 30 non-profit agencies, organizations and social enterprises, set-up tables around the perimeter of the park to display their wares, distribute information and provide interactive fun to fair participants. This is a really fantastic community celebration of neighbours helping neighbours during which we annually host about 3000 guests. We are continuing to grow this fair and we are adding more activities to engage and connect all of our neighbours in the city.
I include a video I made from last year’s Fair in
the Square: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TY6nKbYZSs
I hope you will attend! 🙂

New Text with 911 System
On March 18, 2014 the 9-1-1 centre in Metro Vancouver (E-Comm www.ecomm911.ca) started a new service for the Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, and Speech Impaired (DHHSI) that allows DHHSI persons to communicate with a 9-1-1 operator through a special text system.
There are four very important things DHHSI persons need to do in order to access this special text service:
1. You must register your cellphone with your service provider in advance (e.g. TELUS, Rogers, Bell). There is a website that has been set up for this: http://textwith911.ca/wireless-service-providers/.
2. To use the Text with 9-1-1 service you must call from E-Comm’s service area. A detailed list is on our website: http://ecomm911.ca/calling-911/documents/T911PPT_000.pdf
3. You must have a cellphone that can make voice calls and send/receive texts. If you are not sure if your cellphone can do both, you should check with your service provider (e.g. TELUS, Rogers, Bell)
4. In an emergency, you must first dial 9-1-1 like any other caller to establish a voice connection – this is how the text session starts.
A lot of good information can be found here http://textwith911.ca/ and we hope everyone will read it to understand how the system works.
People who need help registering their cellphones should contact their service provider (e.g. TELUS, Rogers, Bell).
People who have questions about how the system work should contact info@textwith911.ca
If we can provide any additional information that you would find helpful to your organization, please let us know by contacting us at webmaster@ecomm911.ca. Please feel free to put a link to E-Comm’s web page on your website: http://ecomm911.ca/calling-911/T911system.php
