Press Release from Council of Canadians with Disabilities / Communiqué de presse du Conseil des Canadiens avec déficiences
[The GVAD shares this information for all citizens about the issues of accessibility and equality for persons with disabilities / Deaf and Deaf-Blind during this election time in Canada.]
An accessible Canada is a goal that is within reach, if the political will exists to address socially constructed barriers limiting the participation of people with disabilities. Accessibility enables people with all types of disabilities to go to school, get jobs, pay taxes, raise families and participate in political and community life. Accessibility can fuel economic growth. When Canada ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), it committed to progressively improving accessibility (Article 9). The Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) has challenged the leaders of Canada’s federal political parties to implement the CRPD and to share their plans for improving accessibility.
Obituary of Dennis R. Platt
The GVAD and the BC Deaf Community is saddened to learn of the passing of Dennis R. Platt of Ogden, Utah. BC Deaf people know him as being very much a key part of the NWAAD (NorthWest Athletic Association of the Deaf) and the USA Deaf Sports Federation, as well as many other community involvements.. Dennis has several close BC friends from his Gallaudet days.
Rest In Peace, Dennis.

Zoom Focus: Confession – BSL Movie
An historical drama set during Victorian England (23 minutes)
Historical drama exploring issues in Deaf education. Confession’s central characters are inventor Alexander Graham Bell and his deaf wife, Mabel. The film looks at Graham Bell’s hostility to sign language and shows the effect of his ideas on grass-roots Deaf people. When Mabel sees the limitations of a non-signing educational approach for herself, her presumptions are challenged. Starring Deaf actress Sophie Stone as Mabel, Confession is the second film by director Julian Peedle-Calloo, made as part of the BSLBT’s Zoom Focus scheme.
