Deaflympics Summer Games

Seeking TV media/production crew members for upcoming daily SportsDeaf TV news coverage of Deaflympics Summer Games. We are seeking writers, signers and video team members with passion and experience in media, writing, and preferably knowledgeable in deaf sports for pre/during/post production:

Producer – Coordinate crew and all SportsDeaf coverage during Deaflympics.
Field Producer – Assistant to producer, coordinates crews at venues. interviewing people, and responsible for social media.
Sports Writer(s) – Research, compile, write stories, attend events, conduct interviews, write caption transcripts and social media photography.
Videographer/Editor(s) – Videography, edit all video contents, video permissions, captioning, social media photography and social media contents.
Video Technician/Production Support – Technical troubleshooting, merge transcripts in final caption formats, provide technical support, works both in studio and remote locations and social media photography.
Art Director – Create show look – logo, animation, presentation, promotional videos.
Signer/Field Reporter(s) – Interviews and presents news stories in International Sign.

Stipends or Internship
Starting dates varies by position, producer and writer(s) start advance planning and research work. Costs of travel to Turkey, shared accommodations and per diems will be arranged. We are open to paid stipends or academic/community service arrangements.

All Canadians should be able to text 911 in emergency, say deaf advocates

A special committee wants to make it easier for deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired (DHHSI) Canadians to access 911 services during an emergency.

The Deaf Wireless Canada Committee (DWCC) was formed in June 2015 to advocate for the deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing when it comes to issues around wireless technology.

It wants all Canadians to have access to Text with 9-1-1 service, which allows users to text messaging in an emergency instead of a traditional audio call. In its current form, the service lets a user — who must be registered — dial 911 normally with out speaking. The emergency operator can then text back to the caller and converse only by text.

Caryl Churchill’s Love and Information, the Inaugural ASL INTERPRETATION FOR DEAF AUDIENCE MEMBERS on January 21. Director and MFA Directing Candidate Lauren Taylor, routinely incorporated an ASL Interpreters into her productions in her home city of Melbourne, Australia, and asked to do the same for her thesis show. To that end, we are pleased to announce that on Saturday, January 21, we will provide two interpreters to sign the show for Deaf audience members.

In a series of tantalizing vignettes in Love and Information, over 100 vibrant characters search for meaning in their lives. Through sex, death, feeling, thinking, taxidermy and karaoke, they discover each other. Within their intimate whispers, philosophical exchanges and life-changing revelations, we see ourselves and the people that we love.

Caryl Churchill is one of the world’s foremost living playwrights. Since the 1950s, she has maintained inventiveness and a currency that remain unmatched. In Love and Information, her signature wit and profound intuition reveal a kaleidoscope of human connections.

MFA Directing candidate Lauren Taylor hails from Melbourne, Australia, where she received her Graduate Diploma in Theatre Directing from the Victorian College of the Arts after receiving her Bachelor of Arts from LaTrobe University (Drama & English). She is also an alumna of the Lincoln Centre Director’s Lab (New York). With extensive experience as a Director/Dramaturge in new play development, she has worked at the Royal Court Theatre Young Writer’s Programme (London, England). She has twice directed Wal Cherry Award winning plays for Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne and won several Fringe and Summerworks awards in Toronto.

Family Storytime in Sign Language and English at Burnaby Public Library

Join a Deaf storyteller and a children’s librarian for stories, songs, rhymes and crafts presented in both American Sign Language and English. This is a free drop-in for children of all ages and abilities, together with a parent or caregiver. All families are welcome! Interpreters will be present.
