FNDC: Deaf Youth Today Program for 2010

POSITION: DYT – Camp Coordinator (Hornby Island)
April 1, 2010 – July 10, 2010
Camp Date: Wednesday June 30 to Monday July 5th (tentative Hornby Kids’ camp date)
The DYT Camp Coordinator for Hornby Island will work under the direction of the FNDC Executive Director. The months of April, May and June will consist of preparing, planning and hiring camp staff. These hours are all flexible to fit your time schedule. June 30 to July 5th involves full time attendance at camp. This will be a contract fee position (not hourly). Estimated time for this position: 120 to 140 hours of planning, in addition to 5 days of camp attendance (supervision) and final report writing. The contract salary, in relation to experience, to be discussed during interview.

Qualifications
• Fluency in American Sign Language (required) and English (reading/writing)
• Extensive background in Youth & Child Development and experience working with youth
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
• Good Computer skills (excel, word, email)
• Working knowledge of finances and work within & maintain a budge
• Ability to work effectively and confidently in a highly confidential and sensitive youth focused environment
• Knowledge of and extensive experience in the field of hearing loss and Deaf Culture
• Sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
• Ability to work independently from your home office
Responsibilities:
• Work within & maintain a budget
• Plan daily Hornby Camp program in conjunction with Tribune Bay Camp Director
• Advertise and promote DYT Hornby Island Camp to B.C. deaf children at various opportunities
• Screen, hire, train & oversee your team to work at camp
• Connect and work with DYT Day Camp Coordinator re: registrations, staffing etc.
• Supervise and work with DYT Team Leader during camp
• Transportation planning & confirmation with parents re registration and schedule
• Be aware of all details for campers (medical, personal, behavioral etc.)
• Deal with any issues (and follow through) relating to campers, staff etc.
• Incident reports, record keeping, end of camp report writing & evaluations
• Making sure that DYT Policy & Procedure Manual is revised and followed through at all times
• Pass criminal record check
• Being available via email/text message or cell phone at all times during camp
• Prepare and gather evaluations of camp program from campers, parents & staff

The DYT Program Coordinator will work under the direction of the FNDC Executive Director. This will be a contract fee position (not hourly). This position is for organizing and running the Day camp programs. Approximately 120 to 140 hours of planning, and additional work/daily contact during DYT programs. Contract salary in relation to experience, to be discussed during interview.

• Excellent Computer skills (excel, word, email)
• Working knowledge of finances and work within & maintain a budge

• Handle finances and work within & maintain budget
• Handle registrations, program confirmations, record keeping, personnel files, criminal record checks etc.
• Create summer brochure for DYT programs
• Advertise and Promote the DYT day camp programs to B.C. deaf children at various opportunities
• Creatively plan weekly day camp programs
• Work as a team player in partnering with other organizations
• Hire & oversee day camp program staff. Work closely with the DYT Team Leader
• Connect and work with Hornby Island Program Coordinator re: registrations, staffing etc.
• Good people skills for dealing with staff issues, camper issues, families issues
• Follow through and follow up with Team Leader on day to day issues that may arise
• Thorough reporting: Incident reports, end of year report, evaluation summary
• Revision & follow through of Policy & Procedure Manual
• Pass criminal record check
• Maintain the DYT Summer telephone/text phone and be available via email/text message or cell phone during program hours.
• Prepare and gather evaluations of each weekly program from campers, parents & staff.
