Deaf/Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing Support

The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to over 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria Area, encompassing six municipalities.  To provide this service, the District has a current operating budget of $190 million and employs approximately 3,000 staff; which includes, teachers, principals and vice-principals, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.

The Greater Victoria School District is seeking an Educational Assistant – Deaf/deaf and/or deaf or hard of hearing to support a student at the elementary school level. The Educational Assistant provides academic assistance to the student(s), monitors student behavior and facilitates the integration of the student(s) into the classroom and school environment. This position implements programs and materials as designed specifically for the deaf and/or hard of hearing.  The Educational Assistant facilitates communication via oral, gestural and sign language.  

The successful candidate will have completed the ASL Program at Camosun College or Educational Assistant Program Certificate or equivalent post-secondary courses in child management, adolescent development or behavior management.  In addition, the successful candidate must be familiar with AAC programs and devices.  Two years specific experience in working with persons who are deaf and/or deaf or hard of hearing is required.  Personal care may be necessary.

This is a 10 month, 30 hour per week, CUPE 947 position with the hourly rate of pay being $26.09, plus benefits.
