Urban Ink’s Moonlodge by Margo Kane brings an iconic Indigenous Canadian play to the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre

Produced by Urban Ink, Moonlodge is a remarkable one-woman show that deeply impacted an entire generation. Written by Margo Kane (Cree/Saulteaux), an interdisciplinary artist and a leading figure in Indigenous performing arts. Since its premiere in 1990, at the Women in View Festival, Moonlodge has captivated audiences around the world, touring throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia to much acclaim.

Moonlodge tells the story of a young girl named Agnes who hitchhikes to California in search of herself and home. Rooted in the child removals of the 60s scoop, which orchestrated the disruption of Indigenous families and communities by child welfare services, Agnes grows up in an adopted family disconnected from her culture. It is in her journey through America that she finds herself and a way back home.

Playwright Margo Kane is the only actor to ever perform this significant solo work. Now, after a 17-year hiatus, Kane has gifted Urban Ink with the opportunity to give her show a second life. Passing the torch to actor Paula-Jean Prudat and director Corey Payette, this production introduces Kane’s influential work to a new generation, while reconnecting its former audience with a much beloved classic.

Artistic Director Corey Payette believes “it is important for Urban Ink to be producing this work again. Margo’s impact as a theatre maker and performer has been enormous in terms of Indigenous peoples understanding of themselves. Moonlodge was a turning point for Indigenous women’s representation on stage as it made them believe that they could create something like that for themselves. It is important for us to share this story with the next generation of artists and communities, to have a piece like this to uplift us and to let us know that there is a place where you can find home”.

Moonlodge is being produced in association with Arts Club Theatre Company, National Arts Centre – English Theatre and The Talking Stick Festival, presented by Full Circle First Nations Performance.

The Talking Stick Festival is a city-wide event in Vancouver, B.C., that celebrates extraordinary work within Indigenous art & performance. Showcased in this annual Festival (occurring Feb 16- 26, 2017) are both traditional and contemporary multi-disciplinary pieces; from critically acclaimed plays, music, dance and storytelling, to an exhibit, workshops and a Community Powwow; all mixing to provide a rich and unforgettable experience of arts and culture.
